The version with the slipbox is fetching a higher amount, which may be the price on Amazon. It's still in print as far as I know; Shout's just out stock atm (probably a combination of their Shocktober sale and it being close to Halloween), as are a few other places. It'd be weird if they lost the license for the original but not Return or Revenge given they're all licensed directly from Trancas.

Personally I've grown to prefer the Lionsgate 4k/35th blu ray releases over the other ones.

Imo the Lionsgate 4k has a colder daytime appearance, that suits the moody atmosphere of the movie more. than the more saturated Scream Factory 4k does.

That being said, the Scream Factory 4k has better picture detail than the Lionsgate 4k, due to them using the original camera negative.

The Lionsgate 4k on the other hand has better encoding compared to the Scream Factory 4k. Ultimately it comes down to preference.

I thought it looked really desaturated.

Lionsgate has a mixdown mono track only correct? That already disqualifies it imo

2018 Lionsgate UHD: The AC-3 mono track on this disc is a more competently downmixed version of the 5.1 mix with no phase cancellation

The Lionsgate 4K used the same master as the Anchor Bay 35th anniversary BD which I believe used an interpositive. Both releases also had a mono mixdown from the 5.1 rather than the original theatrical mono. Also the Lionsgate 4K at one point accidentally changed aspect ratios from 2.35:1 to 2.39:1.

Shout's 4K used a new 4K scan of the OCN and restored the original mono track. Aside from the colors being much better, it also retains a consistent 2.39:1 ratio throughout. However it had a poor encode and the mono track was a mastering that had DNR.

So both have their ups and downs but I think Shout's 4K benefits far outweigh even the good points of the Lionsgate 4K so go for the Shout release if you haven't already.

I have to say thanks again. I was able to pick up the one copy they in stock and it has a slip. Additionally, it was 30% off so it came out to be just shy of 24 bucks.

As an aside, I wanted to compare pricing online so checked, Amazon, Target, and Shout's site. None of them had new copies on hand. Amazon has a couple of used copies for over a hundred bucks.

Is this officially OOP now?

If anyone lives near an FYE, the one closest to me had a few copies in stock with the slipcase.

I’m usually the kind of person who likes to keep the movies in my collection as they were originally sold, but the Scream Factory Halloween 4K releases are, to this day, the only slipcovers/slipboxes I ever got rid of. That art was so bad that I couldn’t even look at it. Still can’t believe someone actually signed off on those covers

I just watched this version:

The sound during the scene when Michael steals the car is amazing. It really allows my Atmos speakers to shine.

Gave the Shout UHD BD a spin last night for the first time in DV (via LLDV) and the encoding improvement is substantial to my eyes as others have stated. I feel better about this disc even if there is still some room for improvement.
