Nah, you just do that when you don't know how to end a movie. It's a cheap cop out like all of Carpenters endings. Pay attention.

Big Trouble in Little China is Carpenter's best ending, and it's genius to give the film an epilogue which is the first scene in the movie. He even tried to clumsily copy this for Ghosts of Mars. Christine also has a satisfying as hell ending.

Yes he's probably supernatural, maybe. But that doesn't mean he's not completely deranged. He clearly is. You don't need to be supernatural to murder people. |

Assault On Precinct 13 has an awesome ending. As do Prince Of Darkness and They Live.
I'm getting choked just thinking about Starman. The Thing and Halloween are two of my favourite endings ever. So JC has a pretty good record on endings in my book. CGAF what people consider to be a cop out about them. Sounds like fancy talk to me. |

I love Carpenter’s open endings. Halloween simply wouldn’t be the same movie with a tidy ending. It provides just enough resolution to make it worthwhile (i.e.
[Show spoiler] ), but isn’t interested in tying things up in a neat little bow - nor should it be. Giving the Shape an ending (in that particular film anyway) would undermine everything that makes him scary to begin with.

The ending to Halloween is perfect and one of my favorite endings in a horror film, same for Black Christmas.

I love the ending to Halloween. I'm glad we got the sequels, but if we hadn't, the ending would still be great. Why would anyone want a simple *bang bang your dead* ending? We are basically setup for the ending we got....
"You can't kill the Boogeyman" So much of the movie is about Loomis building Myers up as being more than a man. Him getting taken down like a other baddie would have sucked. |

The ending of Big Trouble in Little China was clearly setting up a franchise with ten sequels with the hairy beast monster as the main villain who stalks Jack Burton, Gracie Law, and their future kids and extended family. Shame on Carpenter for not following through on that.

If ever there was a genre that did not require a film to end on certainty and for the audience to be unambiguously well informed at its conclusion, it's horror.
Even a movie that's ostensibly about the devil should not end on "So that was the devil." note. Even if someone says "So that was the devil the whole time." It should not give the audience the comfort that they know what really happened. |
