JC has certainly flubbed a couple movies in his career, but dang, when he's on point (which is more often than not), the whole enchilada is satisfying on levels unrealized by mere mortal directors. I would argue that well over half his filmography have endings that other movies wish they had.

Does anyone own any of the CD soundtracks of this movie? The only one I have is the 20th anniversary one which in my opinion is pretty awful. For some weird reason it has a bunch of dialogues included in the soundtrack including Laurie screaming when she finds the bodies. I just want a soundtrack of this film without the talking and screaming.

Most people agree the original Halloween is one of the best if not the best film in the franchise. Not sure if anyone else feels the same on this but I also like the film because it seems to have taken place in a simpler era where people don’t feel the need to lock doors and kids can be allowed outside without any worries about their safety, like almost an escape to a different era watching the film. I would say it seems to show a better era but reading history it looks like 1978 was not truly a great era due to high inflation and people were not happy with Carter as president. In 1978 I was 14 years old. Prior to Halloween I regularly walked through the city of Seattle and saw movies in the theater by myself beginning in 1975.

The 70's were totally a different time... and I have such strong, positive memories of it growing up. There was still danger of course, but it wasn't in your face 24/7 like it is now....

The original soundtrack release doesn’t have any dialogue or screaming. It also has better audio quality and mixing than the 20th anniversary version. It was released by Varese Sarabande in 1985 and has 11 tracks. My only issue with it is the bass drum that was added to the main theme every time it’s heard.

That bass drum is a deal breaker for me.

I stick with the Mondo vinyl release that uses the original mono soundtrack—which I believe they stipulated they took from the 35mm optical? Been a while since I had a look at that. Who knows, maybe it says “we took it from the original magnetic 35mm master” or “it’s from Shout’s Blu-ray.”

The 1982 CD and LP are a remix of the original score. The 40th anniversary edition is a new transfer of the original music stem.

Oh, the first CD was released in ‘82? I thought it came out in ‘85.

On a side note, the very first release of the soundtrack was a Japanese vinyl in 1979 and it has an alternate/rerecording of the score that includes dialogue from the film.

This is in no way meant to be a slight towards you, but the seemingly endless pursuit of the "perfect" transfer of this one movie could very well be the modern-day substitute for Plato's chair in his theory of form. Your post just reminded me of this thought:

It seems as if there's a perfect transfer of this film in an ideal realm that we can only aspire to match but never will.

Not in the pursuit of a perfect transfer (there is only one 4k transfer afterall, they're not doing more) I just ask for better compression and a better presentation of the theatrical audio. Easy!
