If this 4K release doesn't have the original mono soundtrack, then don't buy it. Lionsgate is not holding a gun or a knife on anybody! I bet the majority of those who're murmuring and complaining about the audio, will be the first ones to buy it regardless, if they had already.

I can keep my digibook if it doesn't have the mono track, but I am buying this if the PQ is much improved with the UHD.

I would have liked the true mono track added but it won’t hinder the release for me, I typically opt for the surround option anyway.

Can anyone answer my earlier question about the soundtrack? I've looked on Amazon, here, but can't find info on whether this 4k release also contains a surround soundtrack as well as the ****ed up mono. Thank you.

Yup, exact same audio options as used on the 35th Anniversary Blu-ray.

Quote:
Audio
English: Dolby TrueHD 7.1 (48kHz, 24-bit)
English: Dolby Digital Mono (640kbps)
This is Bill Hunt’s (amended) quote on the UHD’s audio from the Digital Bits review:
Quote:
When the 35th Anniversary Blu-ray was released (see our review here), there was some controversy as to whether the disc included the original mono audio or not. Investigation confirmed that it was, in fact, not the original audio, but a faux mono downmix (the correct mono audio was later included on the Halloween: The Complete Collection BD box set from Scream Factory – see our review here). Unfortunately, that 35th Anniversary BD mono audio is what’s included on this 4K release in Dolby Digital format. You can tell the difference in a few ways, but one of them is that the opening credits music is slightly different and the scene where Dr. Loomis and the nurse drive up to the sanitarium has a few more thunderclaps that were added later. So if you want original mono audio, the Scream Factory disc is still the only place you can find it on Blu-ray. Of course, the 4K disc also includes the newer English Dolby TrueHD 7.1 mix, which was introduced on the 35th Anniversary BD. Its sound is fuller and more engrossing, while still retaining the ominous silences of the original mono. Sound effects cues have more impact and a more natural linger and decay. Bass is subtle, but welcome. Carpenter’s iconic score is presented with terrific fidelity and depth.

Can anyone list the exact differences between the original mono and 7.1 remix (other than the surround expansion)?

I know there was rain/thunder added when Michael escapes, but are there any other differences?

Many sound effects are altered, music stings are changed in subtle to not-so-subtle ways, Dr. Loomis’s final gun trigger pull click is missing, the music comes in jarringly at the end when Loomis looks off the balcony, as if it was already playing a split second before its heard. Honestly, too many little issues to count. It’s every bit as terrible as the Superman remix IMHO. I had an audio comparison up a while back that detailed everything, but I’m not sure if I still have it..

Aside from this UHD disc, which has a mono track on it.

For those who did, I can't see how they can remember every detailed sound effect, and cue in the movie 40 years later. I just don't believe it! I can't remember how movies sounded 10 years ago, lest 40 because, it wasn't that important. The newer generation who've never hear the original mono soundtrack, wouldn't even know the difference because, they weren't born to see the movie in the theater 40 years ago.
Its not about remembering the theatrical presentation though: the VHS, the criterion LD and DVDs which many of us owned had the unaltered dickeyed up mix we now have for this film. The way it "corrects", for example, the hey jerk speed kills music cue is completely noticeable to anyone with any familiarity with the film on its previously releases or TV broadcasts.

As I said it wont be a problem for those who have never seen it, or have only a passing knowledge of the film, but you don't need to be some hardcore "I remember how it sounded in the theatre nut" to notice how off putting the new mix is in places and to imply otherwise is disingenuous.

I believe there were wind sound effects added to some scenes. Not sure which. The sound of Michael punching through the closet door trying to get to Jamie Lee sounds different.

This is also not quite accurate. The 2007 BD has the actual original mono, though it's lossy.

In fact, I think the standalone 35th Anniv BD and (apparently) the new UHD are the only disc releases not to include the original mono audio in some form, and those seem to have been accidents (rather careless ones, but probably not intentional).

Thanks guys. I tried finding a comprehensive list of all the changes and while these help I’d still like to see a complete list to see if the differences are worth it for me trying to make a remux of the UHD disc with the lossless mono from the complete set.
