It’s one of the more consistent franchises. It’s rare to see a franchise bounce back the way it did after the criticism of 2 and not to mention audiences mixed feelings for Tom Cat. The stunts are a big reason why the series continues today.

True, but I feel like now it is more about crazy over the top stunts and less about actual plotting.

All are very impressive and I love to watch them, but at the end of the day, they feel like they're just there to show off what crazy stunt Tom can do by himself. I like the last two Mission Impossible movies as much as anyone and it is partly due to the amount of practical stunt filming that occurs. But I can't help feeling like the stunts are just there to show off what crazy thing Tom will do next. In comparison to the first 3 the last two Mission Impossible movies, to me, don't hold up as well. |

But they have to one up each film, 3 is the one with the least for me personally. |

And still I wouldn't mind if the series went back to more spy thriller stuff instead of just pure action (like the first one), and I definitely wouldn't mind if they would dial back the humor a bit.

I can understand those sentiments but I applaud this series to trying to raise the bar in terms of practical stunt work in this day and age.

I do too, and it's one of the reasons I'm so excited for the new one coming out next month. I just wish that they had a bit of a better story to go along with the stunt work so that it doesn't feel like Tom's trying to outdo himself. Like there is actually a better reason in the plot for the stunts Tom is doing. It doesn't stop me from enjoying the movies at all. It would just make them better.

I mean, are you trying to argue that it is a bad thing? We all know he's a nutter. But it's TC, a true Hollywood action star and one of the few living breathing OT 8s. A legend. ![]() ![]() https://media.giphy.com/media/YzvPqrOVoS9tC/giphy.gif |

The problem with the stunts in MI is that each subsequent sequel relies more heavily on CGI to accomplish said stunts. The water tank and the car flipping backward are two glaring examples. If they can't complete the stunt in-camera... then don't do it!! |

There are like 17 stunts in those films, and like 2 bits are CGI? Insurance carriers let Cruise get away with a lot but he is not magic.

There is plenty of actual stuntwork in the M:I films and they do NOT rely on CGI other than safety cable removal. |

Any stunt can be dangerous and mishaps do happen, unfortunately. And the last MI had plenty of CG besides wire removal. |

Hmmmm. Certain set-pieces will always have a bit of CG enhancement these days but the commitment to doing so much of the underlying stuff practically is a god-send in this series of films. One terribad flipping CG car doesn't undermine that, and plenty of older movies relied on VFX/SFX (miniatures, matte paintings, process shots etc) to accomplish what a full-size stunt simply could not do because of safety, expense, or both, and just like today you had some stuff that was crap and some stuff that was golden. We still get a shitload of goodness that you'd never see any other actor even dream of doing so I don't see what the problem is, it's when this series goes full CG with all the stunts is when the panic button gets pressed. Never go full CGtard.
