The Shining is different, and Aspect ratio is important as a film lover and collector.

The Shining is the equivalent to the Cinematic & Horror World as LOTR is to the Paperback/Hardcover Fantasy World.

There are preferred book releases just like movie releases. The Shining 4K was bare bones. Can you imagine LOTR barebones? Lets just not. That literal second is obvious if you were as big of a fan as I am. Same with the old tennis ball. I don't like passing on movies I love. I like buying them, and being 100% in that WORLD for the time I'm watching. Maybe you're not that guy. You're just a reviewer.

Nah, I love the pacing in the theatricals. Jackson himself lamented that every time he put something back into the EEs he was wrecking the pacing that he worked so hard to put together in the theatrical cuts.

Both versions are clearly important here-- the reactions here of "TC or nothing!" and vice-versa certainly seem to show that.

I absolutely love the extended editions-- the only time I had a problem with the pacing was the plot takes a bit too long to get going in Fellowship. On the other hand, I treat the trilogy as a 6-part miniseries now, and never tried to watch each extended cut entirely without a break.

I did finally go back and watch the theatrical cuts again last year for the first time since the initial releases on DVD. I enjoyed it, but found that at this point I really do like having all the added footage broken up into 90-minute to 2-hour chunks.

Puzzled by the constant references to "4K remaster" though in the article though, that'll get people's hopes up for a rebuild. But I remember a German site plastering that phrasing all over their reporting of the first Harry Potter UHD releases (Warners released the last four movies first) but - oh look - they turned out to be 2K upscales, as will 99.9% of all 2K masters on UHD.

Maybe LOTR is the exception and gets properly rebuilt in 4K - Two Towers was a very early DI and it gets very creaky in certain moments which are going to be a big challenge to get looking right in 4K HDR using the 2K master - but it'd be a hugely expensive endeavour.

If they rebuild these in 4K and ditch the hideous smearing in the grass from the Two Towers DI, I think I’ll cry tears of joy.

more speculation than confirmation, but we'll see later on down the road what WB is exactly doing with this, hopefully what they did with the Matrix movies and not the Harry Potter UHD disc editions.

That's EXACTLY how I treat the EEs, like a mini-series. I watch a disc per night when doing a rewatch.

Yep yep yep, there's some gnarly smearing built-in to the master because it was such an early DI and they were really struggling with how grainy it was getting.

Include both cuts of each film in 4K, and you'd better port over EVERY single piece of exhaustive bonus content that was included on each and every previous release of these films. I will pay handsomely once to have all of this content in one collection but don't you dare tease me and set me up for another double-dip down the road. I will buy these movies only one more time.

I take it the older scanners introduced a lot of noise in addition to the film grain which they found distracting? Do you have any info on this situation that I could read more about?
