They have it at Redbox for rent -- the 4K is $2.50, but I have a coupon so I can get it for about $2. I know it will be awful, but I'm still breaking in the new set-up.

Saw this over the weekend in 4K when my Best Buy Steelbook arrived early. Didn't see it in theater and purposely didn't read any reviews. I grew up with the original Charlton Heston, etc. movie but really enjoyed this. Some may analyze too much or have prebuilt feelings against the director but I found it a well paced and good movie that had me involved with the characters. Was also running simultaneous fact checking and surprised at the accuracy (yes, haters going to hate with any movie based on historical events). Glad I did a blind buy.

Is this one more Pearl Harbor or 1917? Deciding if it’s worthy of a blind buy. Trying to get as many war movies in 4K as possible.

Midway is a giant turd. The story jumps around way too much, the dialog is ultra hammy and the acting is simply bad. Almost nothing in this movie carries any weight. What a wasted opportunity.

It does look and sound excellent though. The bombing runs were absolutely outstanding, very visceral. The bombing runs, Patrick Wilson and the Japanese actors are the only thing worth watching.

1:34.17-1:40.11 is the best part of this whole movie. 10/10 demo material, for sure.

5/10

I had a feeling just from seeing the trailer. Glad I didn't buy it.

It's more Pearl Harbor, without the pointless love story. Pearl Harbor was more of a love triangle that just happened to take place during the war. Midway focuses solely on the military aspect of the battle and the intelligence leading up to it. Midway is more of a true war film than Pearl Harbor is.

You'd probably love Midway (2019 ) if you watch Midway (1976)

Despite my misgivings about the movie, I picked it up at Best Buy for under $22. I have Panasonic UB-820 and Oppo-203 players. There is a problem between the 4K disc and the Panny. During the Marshall Islands attack, the 4k disc froze twice at around 37.5 minutes and then again at a bit past 39 minutes. It did this on two tries. I took the movie back to Best Buy and swapped it for another copy. On the UB-820 it did exactly the same thing in the same places. When I played it on the Oppo-203, however, there were no problems. There must be some kind of compatibility issue with Midway and the UB-820. If anyone else has a UB-820 and the freezing occurs, please post that here.

I have the same issue on the UB-820, it freezes for a few seconds and then continues playing during the dive bombing attack, but no issue on my Oppo-203 or Sony 800M2. The strangest thing, when I played it using regular HDR10 mode it did not freeze at the 37.17+ mark like it did in DV mode on the 820. The rest of the movie play fine but I do get the two freezes during the Marshall island attack playing in Dolby Vision(DV) on the 820 and the other players have no issues. You saved me from swapping the disc.

I'm not sure why people are shocked by that. Michael Bay never made any secret that that is exactly what it was supposed to be.

He was looking to make an updated World War II film. The plot was no better or worse than Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo, and that's what he intended.

(What I wouldn't give to have the Vista Series cut of Pearl Harbor released on BD, but I think the master burned…)

Actually, watch both to get a good sense of the battle.

The newer movie had better special effects, but I missed the titles on-screen of the 1976 version that told you who everyone was.

Well 13 Hours was certainly miles better than Pearl Harbor which was essentially his version of Titanic, cheesy love story of a real life event.

Same here. Pretty much same scenes as mentioned. Rest of the movie played as normal.

Halfway into Midway. You might say I'm midway through.... And while the dialogue is a bit ham-fisted at times (but really, these are young people in war in the 40's, they WERE that cheesy and cookie-cutter personalities w/absurd bravado), it really is a better way to portray the Pearl Harbour bombings, especially.

I felt so much impact to that sequence. Felt it in my gut that it wasn't built up like in the Bay film. The CGI and scale of the 2001 movie does, of course, outshine it on a technical level. But NOT a visceral level.

War movies are hard to get through in one sitting for me anymore.
