Watched all three UHD EE's. PS5 as the blu ray player. OLED LG 65" CX as the screen. Sitting about 6.5 feet away. These are my opinions.

AUJ seems to start out a bit smeary. Got better as it went on or I got used to the background being smeary. Colors were great. In focus seemed sharper and more detailed to the eye while watching the movie. Did not have ATMOS going, but dialogue seemed clearer than what I remembered it. I would give this a B rating on picture. A- on sound.

DOS was better than AUJ from the start. I did not see any distractions in the movie or anything which made me go "WTF?". Seemed sharper and with more detail while watching versus my memory of the blu-ray EE's. The colors were fantastic. I would give the picture an A-. I would give the sound an A. (Figured out how to enable the PS5 in Atmos about half way through).

BOTFA was better than DOS. I did not see any distractions in the movie or anything which made me go "WTF?". Seemed sharper and with more detail while watching versus the Blu Ray EE's. The colors were fantastic. I would give the picture an A-. I would give the sound an A. Atmos was enabled.

All said, I am happy with the purchase. I typically would not spend $70.00 on a set of movies and was hesitant because I was not as happy with the Blu Ray EE's when I got them and the movies are all over the place. I have no regrets in buying these near release. I will have to go watch the 3D blu-rays when I get my 3D TV set back up after the contractors are done.

PS: I did not watch these one screen cap at a time either so my view may be biased. Ha! Just a joke. Actually thinking I will not post my thoughts in the LotR thread when I watch them because reasons.

The climactic hour of Desolation of Smaug looks incredible. The heaps of golden treasure are practically glowing, Smaug’s color is bolder (his orange eyes are piercing), and I’m seeing tons of detail.

I did not. I thank you for this and will make sure to turn off when I start LotR.

Watched the first two so far and thought they both looked great. Any wide outdoor shot in the daytime looks fantastic to me.

Nothing really stood out to me as looking really bad, but I’m by no means an expert so I really wouldn’t even know what to look for 😅

So the sound ‘improved’ on the third movie because you finally discovered how to enable ATMOS??

LOL. Kind of like criticizing a musician for performing only half a set because you personally were late and arrived halfway through the set.

Yeah, but if I can always update the others if I want to watch them a third time this month, and not really feeling it with LOTR still waiting. Its also why I dont get paid professionally for this. Just an average watch it in motion joe.

Anyone else notice that Peter Hambleton (Gloin)’s name is missing from the credits of the extended edition of Battle of the Five Armies? It’s there in the theatrical cut so I’m guessing there was some kind of glitch. His picture is still there with John Callen’s Oin... just the name is missing.

Do you guys think that these sets will go down in price? Or should I jump now and they will be out of print soon ?

They're releasing another set next year anyway, so either way you'll be able to get them.

Default I have seen all three films,

the Extended Version to be exact, and I just wanted to quickly chime in. I thought they looked great. In particular, that HDR and wider color gamut really brings a new dimension that wasn't there on the blu (Unexpected Journey had some truly beautiful colors that stood out and the scenes with Smaug and his gold, the gold just sparkles and truly is a wonderful sight to see). I also was really floored by the battle scenes in BOTFA, everywhere you looked you could see vivid detail, those moments with the dwarves crossing the battlefield really did have my jaw on the floor. For me, I saw improvement with each entry.

I won't spend much time diving in because I'm no expert by any means and I won't certainly ever come to the level of reviews like Geoff does, but in my own opinion, with the films still fresh in my memory, these Hobbit films are worthy upgrades over the blu-ray, far more so than the LOTR trilogy which I did also watch (theatrical). I want to rewatch them soon to try out the Atmos tracks in all their glory, but for me I would recommend these easily.

Only thing potentially going out-of-print is the Steelbook set, and even that could linger for a while.

The Blu rays look consistently greener compared to the UHD.

Those caps show what an enormous upgrade the colors alone are on UHD.

Not sure how accurate these UHD transfers are (RIP Andrew Lesnie), but damn if they're not eye candy.

There's still an unfortunate level of EE going on here, but it's not as bad as LOTR due to the cleaner source, and there does at least appear to be some legitimate improvement in detail here. In fact, some small objects appear to have an increase in detail I wouldn't think possible from a 2K only source. Perhaps some of the compositing work was re-applied at 4K? That wouldn't change the source resolution of the individual elements, but if you're scaling a 2K image down and then compositing it at 4K, you would get more detail than if you simply upscaled a pre-composited 2K image. Only thing I could think of that could explain that.

Yeah, I noticed that too. It really sucks because I watch the credits all the time, and this issue kinda ruins the emotional moment when I end the trilogy.
