I find the idea that the coloring/tinting of the different worlds won't be monolithic across the entire frame. While revisionist in the sense that it's not what the film looked like originally I'm intrigued by the idea of seeing what the color might have been like if they had the technology available to them at the time.

I'm not a hardcore Matrix fan like many of you but it was the first movie I ever bought on DVD in 2000 and it's been years since I've seen it. I guess that's the perfect kind of movie to buy in 4k.

These catalog titles getting UHD upgrades is becoming a problem! I told myself I would stick to a handful of already own BD’s to upgrade. MATRIX was not on the damn list but Lord, after seeing these, how can it not?

Luckily, I have purchased all of the early BD’s that I own (before digitally copies was a thing) on iTunes so I’m getting all the 4K upgrades without buying again. But, I might need to make an acception with this and when 2001 hits later.

DP Bill Pope has taken advantage of this to create a version with color timing as it was originally intended, crafting a high resolution digital master that is more accurate than the original theatrical release.
Revisionism confirmed. But in all seriousness, I'll take it.

Love the new master from those BD shots! Particularly the shot of Trinity peeking by the wall; the wall is the same green on both masters but Trinity has much better skin tone on the new master. Refined color is what I was hoping for and I hope it's even more improved on the UHD.

That daylight scene of Trinity looks very bad on the new release...like a terrible music video shot on a DVCAM.

I also love that there's barely any tinkering with it's filmic nature. Grain is present in every shot.

Hmm, something about that rooftop scene. The caps from it still look blown out, and the green looks teal.

The entire BD is blown-out. It's blown-out even further in comparison to the old BD. Which was blown-out in comparison to DVD.

Green shades are all over the place - from near yellow to cyan. But I need to see UHD, maybe SDR conversion exaggerates colors.

I never realized how bad the green looked on the old disc. =) The green layer over everything actually looked really bad.

No wonder people who saw it theatrically don't remember heavy green tint over everything.

Man, The Matrix is Bill Pope's finest work.

It is problematic that the Trinity screenshot with the gun in the old BD transfer, you could make out the clouds injthe sky behind her. In the new transfer, it’s blown all the way out. The whole scene is but again, maybe because of the SDR conversion.

I bet it's not a problem on the UHD.

That shot with Triniy aiming with two Berettas at the window. Weeeeeew.

I think I'm gonna fall in love with this movie after watching UHD version. Not that I don't love it already but it's gonna be like watching it for the first time.

great reviews at our site here, over at high def digest & at AVS.

this release appears to be a hit across the board; a reference audio/video UHD remastered title!

I can't wait to own it and watch it.

It probably isn’t on the UHD disc so what does one watch if they don’t have access to the UHD disc but recognize that even downsampled, the new transfer, even in 1080p, is better than the old disc?

This site's review says, "....The Wachowskis, who, in their "Written Introduction" to the commentaries, describe their creation as "a chop-socky flick that comments on the Hegelian dialectic while having a guy who can fly and stop bullets". Aside from that, what more do you need to know?"

Could someone, and to quote Denzel from Philadelphia, "Explain it to me like I'm a six year old."

SDR can do only so much, unfortunately. Either you crush blacks, make image flat or blowout highlights. I'd say, blown-out highlights is the lesser evil in a contrasty case like this. I think they could do a finer job balancing shadows and highlights on this new blu-ray, deepen shadows a bit without crushing them, darken image so there's more information visible in bright areas, but it's still a compromise. Given improvement in all other departments - resolution, colors, SOUND - I wouldn't stress over highlights too much. If you don't have UHD equipment for now.
