Wow, I was so used to the Green tint in the matrix scenes that I had no idea that's not how it always was.
I missed the first one in the cinema and saw it for the first time on VHS. Then I saw the second two in cinemas and there was a green tint so assumed that was always the case with the first film. Looking at those images it looks very odd now it hasn't got it. |

Gonna get lambasted but I think the cool/near cyan tint seen in most those looks pretty hideous to these eyes. I grant you I didn't see it in theatres so I don't have any attachment to the original style choices vs. those made artistically -by directors and same DP- to the franchise' aesthetic, and codified by the sequels.

People are so used to The Matrix being so monochromatic, that certain reactions aren't surprising. I expected green to be toned down and more neutral flesh tones, but I didn't expect acidic blues and reds, and cyan shade to greens.
I believe that certain color exaggeration and gamma fluctuation are due to SDR conversion. The movie's color palette at times goes back as far as the theatrical trailer available online (only more muted).2.0 scan's colors are ruined, but they give overall idea of where palette went in certain shots. It aligns with the new master, even if exact comparison is impossible. Last edited by OutOfBoose; 05-19-2018 at 12:16 PM. |

I believe the murked greenish color of the BD made me less interested in the movie as I bieleve it looked different in the theather at its opening. Even though I have to admit I can't anymore remember how the Matrix looked in cinema around 20 years ago. And the talk of the green after the BD got released made it even worse so haven't even rewatched it. But I have the nice German Trilogy Steelbook where I think I will store my UHD once I can snag it for reasonable price (trying to avoid paying premium for any double dips).

![]() My main issue though is with digital colorists having too much and too fine-grained control without having the trained eye of a pixel-peeper or perhaps the time to fix all the little issues that appear when they wield the power to the full extent. Not to mention that it invites revisionism. Remember photochemical color timing was for the most part very coarse, usually basic control over the entire image, certainly nothing like "can you make this smoke puff blue". Of course film processes and film stocks cause different kinds of color transformations which, unless you have a accurate LUTs simulating those steps (unlikely), might require some manual massaging and selective picking of colors to reproduce. But since the discrete nature of digital makes things much more prone to abrupt stops and weird side-effects additional care must be taken, and I'm a bit concerned by some very obvious digital grading artifacts that have slipped through since the introduction of HDR. I'm loving the additional sharpness and grain and the reintroduction of actual skin-tones though. I'm also warming up to the blue-white-beige color scheme of some of those shots and realized where I recognize it from: ![]() |

Damn. That green just looks so good to me. Love how the UHD looks, but still going to pop in the old BD from time to time.

So glad Warner Bros went to Bill Pope for this.
I absolutely hated the green push on the blu-ray. This looks like it could be one of the best releases of the year--not just May--for the simple fact that this appears to restore the original intent of Pope's incredible cinematography. |

Never saw this "cyan" version of Reloaded trailer:
Colors look closer to the remaster of the original. Plus another impression: http://flix66.com/the-matrix-4k-ultr...lu-ray-review/ Last edited by OutOfBoose; 05-19-2018 at 05:11 PM. |
