I just watched it and it was nothing special. The Atmos mix was fine but the LFE was phenomenal. Glad it was just a redbox rental.

I took the movie back to Best Buy and swapped it for another copy. On the UB-820 it did exactly the same thing in the same places. When I played it on the Oppo-203, however, there were no problems. There must be some kind of compatibility issue with Midway and the UB-820. If anyone else has a UB-820 and the freezing occurs, please post that here.

The rest of the movie play fine but I do get the two freezes during the Marshall island attack playing in Dolby Vision(DV) on the 820 and the other players have no issues. You saved me from swapping the disc.
Same issue at that same time mark.

The only other time I had this problem was with the first Sicario on my Samsung 4K player several years ago.
Wish I had read this thread before waiting to get another copy at Best Buy (which, of course, still has the two freezing points mentioned here).

Still, if some say that discs from Lionsgate are not skipping, what is the best course of action to get a disc that the Panasonic will play successfully in Dolby Vision? Do I need to contact Lionsgate about the problem?

Thanks.

Overall didn’t care much for this movie. Just seemed cartoonish in its look. Just cheesy and cheap. Story was all over the place and just choppy. The acting was meh (especially Ed Skrein the lead who seemed like he was overacting in a school play) and everyone seemed bored except for Patrick Wilson who could have received an Oscar compared to the rest of the cast. Woody and Quaid were OK but they were who they always are, themselves. Other then Bale and DD Lewis, there really isn’t that many actors out there that really act anymore. Maybe if I thought about it more I could come up with a few more.

The Atmos track (even though I was in native 7.1) was fantastic along with the LFE.

4k was good, not great but a step up from the blu which I checked out only for a few scenes.

Shouldn’t have blind bought it and went with a rental. But? I haven’t rented anything in years and believe I need to start doing so.

It's possible that only redoing the DV encoding might solve the problem but unless Lionsgate gets deluged with complaints (and how many home video consumers have a $500 Panasonic UB-820 on the shelf?) I doubt that it will happen. It seems to me that the options are to play the DV version on the 820 knowing where the pauses are, playing it in HDR10 with the Optimizer setting the proper nit level for your TV or, if you have another 4K player that does DV, running the movie on that. As they say, it is what it is.

I played with UB820 without issues, I am doing the conversion with the player and output SDR.

PQ great (not the CG) but watchable
SQ really good, demo worthy sound mix
Movie not bad.

Did they run out of standard issue military web belts? Skrein is wearing a brown leather belt with a non military buckle.

You don't have to keep the movie if you didn't like it, you can sell it on ebay, or trade it in at a local used media store.

Thanks. Would you know what other players out there would be a good substitute? Does that sign end Panasonic 9000? also have the same issue with this movie in DV?

I would agree with everyone that this movie was just ok story wise but it was 100x more entertaining and likely rewatchable than Dunkirk with I thought was a total snoozefest.

Some reason war movies (more than other genres) you get all this threadcrapping about the kind of story you expected it to be. Directly comparing films. Calls for more realism in a hollywood film designed to dramatize and entertain the events, not present it like you went through that hell.

It's nonsense...

Yet. I am guilty of doing it with Dunkirk So, there's that.

I would say if you watched the trailer and still wanted to see it you will probably like it?

It doesn’t have love story, political bs and is just good naval warfare action which was pretty exciting. One of my favorite 4K purchases. I wouldn’t hesitate to show my guests.

The cg looked better on my 120” screen than when I saw the trailer on a laptop for some reason. Maybe I was too engulfed in the center of the screen and loud Dolby Atmos to care.

The 9000 essentially has the same video hardware as the 820 so it may well have the same issue with Midway. There probably aren't a lot of 9000s out there given its price point so unless someone with a 9000 posts about Midway spending $1000 is not a way to find out

A UB9000 owner over on AVS forum confirmed that he got the same pauses on his player. So as far as Midway on Panny players goes, asked and answered.

Thanks for this information.

It’s sad that Panasonic players have this problem. But even sadder that Lionsgate is putting out this DV crap. I just got “Knives Out”, and it had the same problem around 2:01:13!

When I turned off DV output on the player, no freeze was detected. Bummer

FWIW, my UB420 in SDR2020 plays this fine. Definitely sounds like a Panny/DV issue though. I wonder what specifically is causing the issue...

Might be due to the fact that both Midway 4K and Knives Out 4K are triple layered 100GB discs? While I'm no 4K expert, I've seen quite a few members pointing out that transitioning from the dual layer to the triple layer causes some sort of glitch with some of these 4K discs, whether it be freezing or audio issue.

This may seem basic to mention, but have all of you who’ve been having issues with disc skipping upgraded firmware on your players.

I was having a playback issue with my Panasonic 820 and after a firmware update it took care of it.

Gah. I knew I was gonna eat this movie up, and whoooo baby did I ever.

It's Emmerich! We knew what to expect. And a passion project of his? I knew where my expectations were and he met them. Put it in my top 10 guilty pleasures.
