You would think that in a film like that, they would try to take advantage of a full 5.1 system since I guess there are many scenes with planes flying etc., and it would sound spectacular hearing this all around you.

On the other hand, maybe they wanted to make it sound like an old classic film?
it might be to do with the fact that
[Show spoiler]all the engine and plane nosies are made by human voices and might not work in surround

Yes, I believe that was Miyazaki's purpose in insisting it be done in mono... to make it more like a classic film.

Didn't he say something like how he doesn't like how current movies put so much emphasis on sound, and thus decided on mono? I thought I read that somewhere...

Not sure if that's the case or I'm imagining it, but if he did, it's kind of ironic considering that he made many deliberate decisions in regard to sound for the film.

My Only yesterday i finally got round to watching and it didn't play on any of my 3 region free Blu Ray players (tested all of the others and they work fine). Luckily i ordered from amazon so they shipping me a new one when its back in stock (7-8 days to ship).

Can't say I've ever had that problem. I've tested all of them on a PS3 and the last couple on a PS4 with no issues....

Guess i just unlucky I finally had time to watch it and was like damn... They look so "neat" unopened thought. Hate the initial opening but the movies are so damn good.

Also any updates of Cagliostro or we still not re preordering due to awaiting more information.

HURRY UP OCEAN WAVES!!!

I'll keep my preorder of Cagliostro for a couple more months then if it looks like no subs or dub is going to be added then I'll cancel and wait until somebody has it to verify either way before purchasing.
I know, I really want Ocean Waves too. I have a real affinity to that movie for some reason. I'm not particular fussed about the story as such, but really enjoy the setting and the simplicity of the early 90s era; oh, and that old school music!
I tried getting an Ocean Waves art book when I was in Japan last month but one doesn't exist. Not much love for it out there it seems either 😔

Re the opening on new blu rays: very stressful indeed! My worst experience came with Grave of the Fireflies where it has this strange piece of paper inside which is attached to the packaging; mine was half ripped out so I attempted to rip the rest and made a right pig's war of it. So much in fact I had to sell that copy and get myself a new one .... 😉

I think I might get it either way eventually, if only for the storyboard version, because other countries' releases don't have that wonderful interactive PiP HD presentation of them.

Or do they?

I thought you guys here would appreciate this; I've already made one on Whisper of the Heart and here's an unexpected second one; My video on the locations of Ocean Waves!

Whilst being here in Japan I did think of visiting Kochi, Japan (where the film is set) but it was never on my must do list. Meeting my girlfriend, who knows the film and grew up in Kochi! Just made it happen as a two day break from work really!

Although she didn't go to the same school in the movie, she says it's the highest ranked in the area apparently (ironic considering a small part of the films plot revolves around it being the worst lol).

OMG I'm looking forward to watching this! Thanks so much. Could you post your Whisper locations' movie again as I must have missed that. I went last month to Seisumi-Sakuragoaka but on a rainy day....

Yeah I flicked through your photos (which are very good, btw) a couple pages ago. I've not been in the loop regarding the blu-rays either lol.

Sorry about the rain. Tbh I timed my trips to Tokyo to coincide with good weather. Ending up going twice! I'm tempted to go again, one last time, in summer because I missed that Cafe you went to! (really can't believe I missed it!... lol)

Thanks for your comments re the pictures. How cool is this though: at the start of your Kochi video you show the moon, dated the 16/03 - I saw that exact moon on the same day - I was up the Bunkyo Civic Centre taking pictures of the sunset that same evening!

Hi everyone^o^/

I've been following this thread for a while now and have finally decided to register! I've been a Ghibli fan ever since I saw Totoro as a little girl. Recently I've started collecting the Japanese blurays and have a question before I put in my next order. I'd like to preorder the upcoming titles from Amazon Jp and also include the ones I'm missing (Pom Poko, Mononoke & Cat Returns). I've never preordered with Amazon Jp before but they don't charge you until they ship out, right? But what if you include already released items in the same order? Will you have to pay for those items up front and the rest later? Or how does this work?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Amazon.jp works the same way as .com.

They only charge you when the items ship. Pre-orders or no pre-orders.

Can anybody remind me how to access the 'hidden' English dubs on the ponyo and laputa blu rays? Trying to play for my daughter but can't remember!
