Saw this at a free screening tonight and I'm legit at a loss as to how to feel about it. I know I generally liked it and know there's a lot to unpack with it, but the people saying this was basically "if Terrence Malick directed "The VVitch"" REALLY undersold that. Mainly because I wasn't expecting half of the soundtrack to literally be lifted from "The Tree of Life".

Saw this yesterday, and thought it was a strange, and interesting film. I didn't know much about it going in, and expected it to be more of a horror than it was. It obviously has horror elements, as it deals with with witches, but it's much more of a loose-narrative drama film. It's a slow-paced film, but is filled with beautiful, and haunting imagery, and also a great deal of poetic dialogue. The main character doesn't know much about the outside world, nor does she have much understanding of what it's like to be human, so I found the parts where she expresses her thoughts, and describes her surroundings to be really fascinating. All of that is through narration rather than spoken word, and it can be hard to understand at times, as she doesn't have a proper grasp of language.
This is very much an arthouse film, so it won't be for everyone. The flow of the film, and its dreamlike narrative requires some patience. Like others, I was reminded of Malick, and Eggers to some degree. I learned after watching that this was director Goran Stolevski's first feature film (which he also wrote), and I have to say, despite some of it not working for me, it was still a pretty confident, and ambitious debut. |

I thought the central conceit of the film was a pretty good one, but one that would have worked better at 80-90 minutes or so. Making the movie almost 2 hours long meant that the concept started to wear thin long before the final stretch. But it still has a lot of interesting ideas.
