I agree 100%, true they can do another pressing as needed, but I think many would be shocked to see some #'s of how many copies specific films have sold. I think there are awesome great catalog titles out there but how many out there bought Blake Edward's '10', or a film like Being There? (Sorry didn't mean to pick on WB titles just used as examples.

Well....one problem with this is that there are a lot of good films out there like 10 and Being There that people just don't know are available. I'll be honest, I had no clue they were on blu-ray until you just posted that comment. With stores not stocking as much on their shelves, we have to use Amazon or this site, and sometimes you don't know you're even looking for something until someone points it out.

I don't think three years is that big a deal to wait for a film if it has gone out of print (if sales warrant it returning to print). What about Disney returning films 'to the vault'? Those classic films usually stay out of production for - what - seven years at a stretch? [Which, unfortunately, means it will be another six and a half before they MIGHT fix the horrendous things like the Sword in the Stone blu.]

Most films, even 'common' popular films simply don't have enough re-watching appeal to stand up to large production runs for a hard copy to be worthwhile at all. It is cheaper/easier for studios to sell large numbers of films in clusters to places like Amazon or Netflix for streaming. That way, they get their profits upfront (as they do with Twilight Time). They also are only out preservation costs (repairing film stock and updated scans in some cases), which theoretically they are doing anyway for anything they think is worth preserving (other films they leave 'as is'). No packaging costs, no pressing costs, no shipping costs, no return credits. Just pure 'in the cloud' profit.

It costs a lot of money to repair damage to film stock (e.g. digitally erasing scratches, color fading, etc.), which is a requirement for pressing a film to a hard copy like a blu, (unless one is producing bottom of the barrel film releases). That is, unless one doesn't care in the slightest about one's studio name being equated with shabby work [which, again, Disney is heading for with their Saturday-morning-cartoonifying of classic films, oversaturating their color toward primaries, and completely removing grain and film detail].

It'll be interesting to see what occurs for some of the OOP TT releases when the 3-year window expires. We already know they have some tentative plans to re-issue a DVD title or two to Blu-ray.

The best test case may be Fright Night at the end of this year: it was released December 2011 and was a quick sell-out (just a couple months after pre-order became available). I can see them being willing to do another run of 3000 for this one.

If Fright Night did come out again from TT, it would be interesting to see how quickly it sold out, having already sold out once.

Also, technically earlier Blu-ray releases are sold out: The Egyptian (July 2011) and Mysterious Island (November 2011), but neither of these were quick sell-outs, and the The Egyptian also had a DVD release, which I think makes it less likely to see any immediate re-issue.

If they do rerelease, I wonder if they will make any improvements over the originals. That could be possible extras, or just subs & proper chapter stops for their early titles.

Have they ever directly said anything about reissues? I know the topic comes up from time to time but I can't remember seeing any firm info one way or the other.

basically all they said was that they would consider it on a title by title basis... nothing but a vague "maybe if we feel like ti"

I can't remember from my only other purchase with them but does SAE send out ship confirmation emails?

But that's a title that they previously released on DVD only that's been mentioned as a possible upgrade to Blu. Not quite the same as reissuing a sold-out Blu-ray title.

True, but I would love to have this as a Blu-ray, as well as the Flim Flam Man that was also only released as a DVD.

A month or so ago TT posted on their page that an upgrade of a previously released DVD was on the docket for May 2014. I seem to recall it was Fate is the Hunter. They should be announcing May and June titles in the next week or two.

I know that. I was answering a specific question that was a sidebar of the re-issue of a blu-ray conversation.

No, they also said this:

We have and will always mark when a title hits the less than 500 threshold.

Apparently less than 200 of Enemy Mine left.

For those interested in Violent Saturday, it's just been announced as part of MoC's Q2 slate.

Thumbs up

I bought my first Twilight Time release in Man in the Dark 3D. Kind of neat they attempted a 3D Blu-ray of a lesser known film like this. Gotta support that, and hopefully, will lead to more notable 3D '50s films on 3D Blu-ray.
