The only time where the cart game works to perfection is for high demand pre-orders. The countdown we had for NOTLD 1990 and Christine was 100% "on the ball"...

I guess that means most of those will be TT releases in the US.

I really think this one will come from Criterion and no knock on TT, but I hope it does. I'd really like some extras for it.

If TT gets Sleepless in Seattle, I'll wait for the US release...if ONLY for the score. Otherwise, I'd just import.

Not necessarily. Probably not. Hopefully not. Just as Fox has kept some titles from its Studio Classics series (e.g. How Green Was My Valley, Gentlemen's Agreement, and Laura) while licensing others to TT (e.g. The Song of Bernadette and Leave Her to Heaven), what makes anyone think it will be a heckuva lot different with Sony? There aren't enough TT release slots each year to do all...or most...or even a significant number of either studio's catalogue. Also, let's not forget about Sony's recent 'Mastered in 4k' announcement...they *might* be reserving some of those titles for a splashier domestic release under their new super-HD branding.

But even if TT does end up doing at least some of those titles, I think it's just as likely they could surface via an arrangement similar to TT's deal with Fox for At Long Last Love...a co-production kind of thing where TT just handles the domestic distribution via SAE. Since all of these are pretty high profile award-winning Columbia/TriStar titles, there was never any guarantee that TT would get to do them anyway...or even more to the point, would want to do them. I mean, nothing in that list really excites me in terms of IST possibilities. Truth be, I don't care if I go to my grave never hearing the ditties from Guess Who's Coming To Dinner and The Way We Were again.

In the long run, I suspect it will be better for the depth of collector interest in Twilight Time if they don't get bogged down with too many of these near-recent, more mainstream appeal Sony titles anyway. We need more Experiment in Terror, Nicholas and Alexandra, and Major Dundee ...even Lost Horizon. And less Steel Magnolias and As Good As It Gets. Heck, the former seem to be outpacing the latter in sales to boot. I mean, the only 80s/90s Sony titles that have had any significant traction so far are those with a dedicated Horror/Fantasy fanbase anyway.

So what does it matter if TT has a gorgeous Sony 4k master of a catalogue title that lacks powerful fan and collector 'hooks' - that certain 'je ne sais quoi'? None of those pictures announced for the German market really jumps out as warranting TT's showcase collector treatment. Nice movies, even very nice, but...no recurring mystery...no compelling allure...just not my flavour of soda pop...

I saw The China Syndrome last year for the first time since its '79 theatrical release PowellPressburger, and you know what, with its semi-documentary cinematography and TV-style staging, it looked just fine upscaled from Sony's SE DVD. Nothing about that movie screamed "TT Blu-ray NOW!". Heck, there isn't even a score to isolate!

So I say let Sony do all that mainstream mid-tier catalogue stuff themselves, taking it overseas if they can't be bothered with a domestic Blu-ray release. I mean, not every old movie, however well made or remastered, needs this niche label's support...or by extension, ours. Especially with so many other neglected gems in both studio's catalogues much more deserving of rediscovery and reappreciation via TT's showcase collector treatment.

TT doesn't have to release China Syndrome I only mentioned it because it was mentioned on a previous post for an upcoming European BLU release this year.

On the films score side note I own the Intrada CD and it sold out in a few days when it was released.

Oh I know, it was just on my mind as an example of a title that would seem to benefit little from a TT Blu-ray release.

"Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" by Smashing Pumpkins???

After a little investigation though, I see that there was a Michael Small score for The China Syndrome which was never used. So I take it back; that would be a very interesting supplement if TT did run with it.

Since Sony is being ultra-cautious about releasing titles to the U.S. market themselves, then I hope we see other licensing avenues open up to get their catalog titles out the door beyond TT's limited release series and Mill Creek double features, especially if Image is no longer in the mix. I am really interestd in seeing TT make a similar arrangement with Sony as they did with Fox for At Long Last Love. While not an immediately recognizeable catalog title - and I am not sure how well it will sell - TT taking on ALLL cracks open the door for some good future possibillties for us as film lovers and consumers. This potentially plants the seeds for TT having a second line of releases that they do not restrict to limited editions. How practical such a thing is for TT, or whether they would even want to expand their catalog with a second line, none of us can say, but I wish they would move in this direction as they gain "legs" under their business and plan for the future.

As I admitted many, many moons ago oildude, even if TT somehow managed to double or triple their output, that would still be barely drops in the bucket for the Fox and Sony catalogues.

I welcome any titles that TT has cherry-picked for presentation quality and retrospective cult film appeal, especially those with underated/underappreciated scores. But for more mainstream titles without such collector 'hooks', TT's unique added value seems kind of wasted.
