Honestly, I'm stumped as to why this one is so popular.

The main complaint is that people want it released widely so they can get it for 5 dollars during trade and save. It's just the price issue.

Exactly people these days want everything for $5 or $10 with many happy to wait for the price to fall to those levels. The issue for those people is as a limited product TT can keep the price fixed at $30 throughout the sales run.

All I say guys is for those old enough to remember think back how expensive laserdisc was plus add inflation to today. You had to be much more selective on what you bought in those days.

Yes, this is very strange... Maybe TT was playing the cart game too and assumed it was sold out.

I believe the point was "How many $35 releases do we see from various labels with absolutely NOTHING offered at all?

That is a valid point. Olive Films has barebones releases and you can get them for 1/2 the price that TT charges.

When/if the transfers are reused in the future, they will probably be barebones releases.
I agree that they do a nice job on their cover art and booklets, but the now bolded part of your post is a HUGE assumption in your part.

How did you learn of the number of copies left? Is that displayed as part of the checkout process and I'm missing it? Or was that from a Facebook post? (And why not a proper fan page that one can "Like" as opposed to a person/individual page that one "Friends" on Facebook? My "friends" don't make me jump through timely hoops in order for me to give them my money.)

Placing a number of copies in SAE's cart and updating until an approximate number is revealed....this has been criticized but is probably more accurate than any number that TT is able to provide its customers, given today's fiasco.

At the end of the day it will not be TT's fault or SAE...maybe the Amazon's servers, or the company which runs the check out system, or maybe a "ghost in the machine" .

Thanks. I guess I'm currently amongst the critical because the site just allowed me to cart up 4,000 copies of Philadelphia.

Pretty sure if TT released Caddyshack II at 29.99 it would sell out within a week.

Yeah, because Criterion must be dying to release Night of the Living Dead '90 and Sleepless in Seattle.

It could happen: remember the Shock and Awe when Criterion released (a non-anamorphic DVD of) Armageddon.

The companies did not collapse because they couldn't release the title, they released other titles. If TT is so dependent on Sony that they cannot pass their titles up, that's on TT. TT picked the model or agreed to the model - that was in their control - that is all I am saying.
Respectfully, I think what you're saying is akin to arguing a straw man. TT has control over their "business model." [For the sake of discussion, I'm defining that term as referring to their being a boutique company with brand equity amongst a collector/enthusiast audience interested in what are often limited releases and the basic infrastructure needed to sell their product. I'm sure we both agree that some of these releases shouldn't be limited but I think you're misconstruing this notion of "control" in that process.]

But that "control" is something of a moot point given that that "control," as I said before, is trumped by the politics of the licensor-licensee relationship. In other words, I think it's safe to opine that the only reason they're in business with Sony is because Sony found that model acceptable. And as has been mentioned in this specific sub-discussion I think a page ago, it is a (SAE) model that predates TT's relationship with Sony.

It feels/seems a bit to me like you are over-invested in the potential power of TT saying "no, we refuse to release such and such title"; as if their doing so would mean that said title would ipso facto be in greater supply and/or less expensive from some other source. But that kinda defies the fact pattern and logic, doesn't it? The very fact that Sony is approaching licensees indicates a disinclination to release certain titles themselves.

As someone else also mentioned, there could also be package deals going on here: TT gets certain titles which have performed at higher levels in terms of box office and historical home vid units sold in addition to certain titles that have lower levels of performance as a bundle. Regardless of "business model," I don't think it would make business sense for TT to say "no" to titles that are at least likely to sell faster (let's agree for the sake of discussion that they will all eventually sell out) when that revenue likely finances their ability to pay the license fees.

I think I understand your point and agree that it is problematic to say TT has "NO control." But the larger point is, if TT wants to be in business with Sony and sell more BD units on probably every one of these film titles than they do of their more outre soundtrack CDs, then they likely have to agree to the terms that Sony dictates which impact what most of us are interested in/affected by as consumers: price and availability.

I'm reminded of the scene in Casino wherein Ace tells a reporter, "You could say "I'm the boss" . . . when Mr. Green is not around." Nicky holds up a newspaper reporting on the interview with a headline that reads, "I'M THE BOSS!" LOL. In other words, of course Ace has power as the, um, "Food and Beverage Director" but he ain't by any means in charge.

You can defend their model which I see you doing but please don't say TT has no control in how they run their business. They picked this model and stand by it and that is their right to do so but it is not out of their control.
Did you miss what I said in bold, Paul R.S.?
Funny how defensive people get for TT when you say they have control of their own business choices as if that's an attack.
