Well, I was speaking of US labels. And the ones you listed typically put out quality discs, sure. But none of them have deals with major studios, which was what i was implying.

Olive has put out several excellent remastered BDs. And Mill Creek does exactly the same thing TT does - releases the masters Sony gives them. No isolated scores and perhaps a bit of compression, but other than that the only difference is 25 bucks and an 8-page booklet.

You forgot to mention Olive Films who consistently releases great Film Noir titles. which reminds me, I need to purchase Body and Soul. I hope they release Requiem For A Heavyweight one day or any studio for that matter.

Olive puts out the cheapest thing they can. They're too cheap to even do English subtitles, discriminating against a huge demographic of people. But they just don't care.

TT is a couple of people who love films actually trying to put out the best version they can. Considering that they break even around 1500 titles, they are sustaining off the titles that DO sell out, which isn't many.

It's not that they 'don't care'. Most boutique labels don't include English-language subtitles/closed-captioning on their releases - when you have a limited budget, it doesn't make any economic sense to spend additional funds on something that is only relevant to a small portion of your audience. That's not to minimize the effect of a lack of subtitles for hearing-impaired viewers, it's just that they represent a tiny fraction of the overall purchasing public. From the view of the independent label, that's time and money that can be more constructively be spent elsewhere.

Great point. When I think of Olive blu-rays, cheap and lazy both come to mind. At the very least, Mill Creek (!) now includes ENG subs with their bargain basement releases. Though it should be pointed out, not all TT blu-rays have ENG subtitles, either (some of the Fox titles, the recently released Disappearance).

I have more of an issue with Olive's relatively small file sizes - they seem to be consistently 13 - 14 GB. Surely utilizing a bit more of that BD-25 wouldn't have any real additional cost?

Actually, it IS because they don't care. Even TT puts subs on now, and they're a boutique label. The films that Olive gets have sub files already created for the DVDs. All it takes is including them. They don't have to create anything.

And actually, sign language is the 2nd or 3rd most spoken language. So it's a bigger percentage than you think.

Same here! I know maxing out a disc doesn't always mean the best image quality but those file sizes are redic.

I'm not questioning this statement, but has re-licensing by TT been brought up before? Do TT have first dibs on (re)licensing titles? Wouldn't a repressing of, say, Fright Night cause just as much grumbling as rejoicing? It'll be interesting to see how this scenario plays out - I can only imagine how quickly the Fright Night prices will drop when/if a re-licensing is announced.

Unfortunately this group is a very vocal (and predictable) one, and they'd just add the repressings to their well-worn list of complaints, along with the NOTLD tinting, TT's not limiting pre-orders to 'X' numbers, website slowdowns, autographed copies announced after original release dates, Ed's grumpiness, high price points, shipping not being handled sequentially, etc.

It's true, the haters need to move on. It was sort of understandable in the beginning (with their first few "major" releases), but all the complaining is just annoying at this point. I kinda figure though, if they weren't crusading against TT, they'd still be clogging up other boards with their misguided anger.

This has probably been said, but don't you think TT is limiting themselves (financially) by only releasing 3000 copies of each title? And most of these movies are not worth the outrageous prices they are going for on Amazon and ebay.

Look, I understand those complaints and I feel really bad for non-native English speakers or hearing-impaired people. But it's not just a cost situation. It creates a huge time lag to create subtitles and then there are a whole bunch of ancillary issues that pop up, like increased QC time, and it just doesn't make sense from a business perspective and in terms of trying to get our releases out in a timely manner. Also, we're not the only label that doesn't include subtitles on all of our releases. "
