No-one's getting ahead of themselves tob. England don't have a lot of fans outside of these isles and that's fine, if they'd scraped over the line against Panama (or worse) then people would be taking the piss for barely being able to beat such a useless team, if they steamroller them then it's a worthless win. They can't win, except when they do. Like today.

Nowt to do with common sense mate, Dublin just stated what a good performance it was, which was the absolute truth. I don’t care if it’s Germany or San Marino, doesn’t change the fact it was a good team performance.

That's very true. As an Englishman, I'm delighted at England's win today of course, and it's important to get through to the next stages. But I'm sure any England fan realises there's still lots of work to get through and there'll be some tough opponents to play against.

Lads i am being honest i like everyone else outside England would have loved to see the biggest upset of all time in the World Cup but we didn't and you won.
My point is from now until you meet a good team which ye didn't play yet the English mentally will get worse and worse just take the media for example from Sky Sports to the BBC that will bring up the same crap in every tournament can we win it now.
Come on lads two games against Tunisia and Panama just focus on one game at a time but England is the only country who do this every time even John Barnes said in the past when England qualify for a tournament its like they expect to be in the final instead of focusing on one game at a time.

That's my point of course you should be happy when your country wins but let's have common sense too.

What do you mean, the mentality will get worse? That’s just bullshit. You honestly think we (UK) are not cautious about getting carried away? What do you want us to say? We would have been the laughing stock of the world if we had lost today. We won and we won in style. I’m proud of the fact we went out there in punishingly hot weather, overcame dirty tactics and another wrestling match and won in Style with one of the best strikers in the world getting a hat trick. I am not sure which media you have been watching, but they all joke about the dangers of getting carried away. That’s been a running theme throughout the World Cup. People are going to be patriotic about their country Tob, surely you understand that. If Ireland qualified and they win 6-1 today, are you telling me you wouldn’t be on here waxing lyrical about the performance and the fact you are in the knockout stages?

I consider you a friend Tob but this is just sour grapes mate. You are entitled to hate England, of course you are but let’s not pretend that a great performance didn’t matter.

Here is a example for you straight away after your game today http://www.skysports.com/football/ne...in-over-panama.
Steedeel dirty tactics come on now they had a few players who tried stupid things like wrestling opponents in the penalty area but dirty tactics is a whole different story.

“Panama are a pub team...with all due respect.”
LOL, that’s not being respectful at all! They did well to get to the World Cup, but they were just outclassed today. They’re hardly a pub team though.

A good point really, taking Italy as an example. They were generally considered one of the favourites in previous tournaments, but on this occasion they didn't even qualify, which was a surprise to me.

To be honest, judging by their first half showing, Poland would probably lose to Panama.

Sad thing is I love them Irish lads, Clinton O'Morrison among them, but whatevs. Let tob stew in his sour anti-English grapes, as he's perfectly entitled to do, and we'll get on with supporting our team.

As for Columbia, they were as good as Poland were poor and they looked terrific tonight. If we get them in the round of 16 they could well turn us over. I don't normally like John Champion's commentary but his double act with Ally McCoist has been a highlight for me, they're a laugh.

Meh. If people can't get carried away when we've just posted the joint biggest win of all 32 games thus far, when can we get carried away?

Normally I'd be right there with you tob, trying to play down our chances (people will surely remember all that "Golden Generation" bollocks), but seeing as we've qualified for the next round in the same amount of games it took us to be knocked out 4 years ago, I'd count that as progress. You may not, but it is what is.

England overcame limited, cheating opposition by smashing them to bits and we're loving it because we just don't do that at major tournaments! This team is young, fresh and has no fear, it's a complete and utter breath of fresh air for us long-suffering Englanders.

We scored more goals today than in the entirety of our 2010 and 2014 finals campaigns combined (seven games).

Yep. I dunno if tob reads British/English papers or watches a lot of British/English sports coverage, but it really has been the COMPLETE opposite, England's chances have been repeatedly played down time and time again in the run-up to this event. And after the twin disasters of 2014 and 2016 and the subsequent farce with Allardyce having to step down, this was just so.

But there's always a secret hope your team will do well, I don't care what club or country you support, and when you actually get given a crumb of optimism - not so much a crumb in this case, more like the entire loaf - then it's only natural for people to start to believe. If that means we've reverted to type in tob's mind then that's fine, but there isn't an Englishman alive tonight that doesn't feel ten feet tall after that performance and we're going to bloody well enjoy it before the bubble inevitably bursts.

I didn’t see the problem with that article you linked to Tob. Cautious optimism sums that piece up. I though it was well written and just stated the facts.

As for your opinion, they weren’t dirty? I don't know what to say mate. We were obviously watching a different game.

Finally, as I repeated earlier, I’m not getting carried away. I just enjoyed a good performance. A record win, a hat trick, a good performance and battling against extreme heat and dirty tactics imo. Also, we are one of the youngest teams in the World Cup. Compare that to some of the favourites who have struggled and I am hopeful for the future. Not carried away, of course not.

No hard feelings at all Tob, as you know I speak my mind. Everything has been civil mate?

I was hoping Shakira would turn up for the Columbia game and do a half time belly dance, but it didn’t happen! Would have topped the day off nicely.
