As per the norm of discussion, of course this can be the case. Looking at the screenshot comparisons, though, it doesn't seem to be. More fine detail can be seen on the JP disc. It doesn't look like it has compression problems from those at least.

After many years of lacklustre BDs here in Sweden it seems to look brighter if you go by some of the recent discs from Norway and if you don't need/want eng subs. Usually handled by the same company all over Scandinavia.

Dallas Buyers Club
US - AVC 31993 kbps, DTS-HD MA 5.1 3102 kbps 24-bit
NO - AVC 35705 kbps, DTS-HD MA 5.1 3135 kbps 24-bit, no English subs

Lone Survivor
US - AVC 29995 kbps, DTS-HD MA 5.1 3897 kbps 24-bit
NO - AVC 38000 kbps, DTS-HD MA 5.1 3827 kbps 24-bit, no English subs

American Hustle
US - AVC 24938 kbps, DTS-HD MA 5.1 2749 kbps 24-bit
NO - AVC 36287 kbps, DTS-HD MA 5.1 1786 kbps 16-bit, no English subs

Audionotes: Original audio track: max 24 bits, average 16 bits, most common 16 bits.

These are interesting to know. That also means these discs are available in SE, FI, and DK as well.

I remember buying the Mission Impossible set (my first Scandinavian discs) after seeing info in this thread. Suddenly, there were all sorts knocking it. Personally, I thought the MI set looked fabulous, so that's my take - although, obviously, my experience is much more limited than yours.

Too bad on the missing 24-bit audio though but it's just talk anyway
Wasn't there a japanese edition with high bitrate too?

The German Henry V Bluray , seems to be much better than the US one:

Can't find a thread for this, so ...
1) Is it a DigiBook? Picture looks like one but it may be a pic of the "deluxe" edition.
2) Is there a better overseas version?

There were two different editions of that release. The deluxe version came in a Digibook. You've linked to the standard edition. Both feature the same BD, the deluxe packaging adds a color booklet.

I can't believe that the U.S. version still has only standard DD. Definitely worth the import for TrueHD. Great soundtrack!

Yeah, I figured that they were just using the same picture. I'd have far preferred the DigiBook, but, in the end, not knowing if it's any good or not, I went the cheap route (about 1/3 the price). It should arrive next week.

I'm putting together an Amazon.JP order and wondered if the releases of The Prestige & Memoirs of an Invisible Man worth adding to the list?

Sorry I meant adding to my purchase list rather than the list on the first page

I was going to order Memoirs of an Invisible Man until I saw the ridiculous price on the JP disc. I decided to go with the much cheaper DE disc since it looks decent on its own.

The pricing is the main reason I was asking, as you say it's ridiculous! As i'm looking at doing a large(ish) order, basically all my JP wants so I'm tempted to add it but would happily for go the pleasure if there isn't much difference between this and the DE disc.

Do you know if the Prestige is a major step up? I know the current easily available (cheap) releases all seem to have their own issues with the PQ.

I'm not sure for The Prestige. It may just be the uptick in bitrate.

I can see tech-uk owns a copy, hopefully he will see this and post a reply. If not I'll drop him a pm to confirm the AQ specs English: Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (48kHz, 16-bit) and see what he says regarding the PQ as well.

You called?

As per my review, the PQ difference is slight, better compression over the UK release and US release, and thus grain is preserved better and slight increase in detail, not by much though.

One scene that featured banding on the UK release, isn't as bad on the JP release, still there, but toned down.

The AQ, both the TrueHD and LPCM 5.1, 48kHz @ 16-bit soundtracks are superb, and better than the UK releases lossy DD track.

Although if you are region free and already have the US release I would only purchase the JP based off the higher video bitrate.

But the JP disc is superior than the UK disc.

Here is a comparison between the UK (same as the DE release) and US releases:
