I thought I would let you know that L'amant (The Lover) has received a new release from a recent 4k transfer of the film:

The main problem is that it doesn't have English subtitles for the French audio track, which is a real shame for those who want to watch the film as intended.
I hope this will be released internationally with English subtitles.

The film's original language is English. The problem with the new French BD is that French subtitles are forced on the English audio track.

Oh, really? That's great news. It's a bummer there are forced French subtitles then, which they seem to enjoy doing (Mission to Mars), but it's not nearly as bad as no English subtitles for a French film. I should have researched better.

Its not noise, its grain.

How is "grain preservation" better if there is no loss of detail on the Criterion? No softness, no DNR artifacts. It's noise from compression.

Encoding differs, yes its the same transfer, but it is not the same encode.

The grain structure is blotchy on the Criterion release. This is the same situation as the Thief comparison.

Grain isn't detail, but it should be consistent.

From those stills, there is a tad more blurriness in comparison to the UK, which offers slightly finer detail. Fine grain just helps on that matter. Can't say how much this plays out in motion though, haven't seen a sample. Strongly depends on panel size anyway.
