I note you don't list the JP Avalon, HD. Any word on whether it's the actual, unaltered version or the edited DVD version? AQ/PQ?

Damn. Well, the BD is $50-$75 ... so, if no other opinions roll in, I may pick up a JP DVD for $10 (haven't seen it in years-who knows).

The JP disc arrived, looks like a very nice bitrate Won't do any best pq remarks since I haven't compared them.

It does have English subs. It's the third subtitles stream on the disc, the first two are Japanese. Sloppy work, wesslan!

I've compared the PQ of the below discs...


They don't appear to be from the same source, (unless the Japanese scanned it, pooped on it and then gave it back to Disney),simply because the US disc has much more print damage on show. The typically hilarious bitrate on the JP disc makes sure that it retains a nice grainy texture, whereas the US disc looks smoother in places, or the grain takes on a noisier appearance when the bitrate dips quite low.

That said, they look incredibly similar contrast and colour wise. I have to put my hands up and say that the US disc actually isn't that bad, considering its age, (hell, the JP master is probably older as it appeared on an HD DVD that pre-dates Disney's BD). It has its issues as pointed out above, but it hasn't been DNR'd to death.

So to conclude, if you own Reign of Fire already via Disney's release, I wouldn't be running to pick up the Japanese disc, (unless you love the film like I do and don't care about owning another edition). Yes, it's very nice and includes all the extras from the domestic release, plus some Japanese trailers, but there simply isn't a vast enough difference, IMO.

Cool very interesting since I just went with what BDinfo said and I don't think I saw english listed there but I could be wrong. This is also very unusual for Pony, the last few titles I watched didn't have subs on disc.

The Recruit is coming up cheap in september, also a early disney titles. Wonder if that also have these amazing bitrates. And remember we with very large screens want higher bitrates. If you are 50 inch or under the difference is probably even more marginal.

I don't know. All the DVDs/BDs list the same running time. It was a poster/reviewer on Amazon who mentioned the difference, claiming that Miramax added dialog and changed the colors : "the original washed out color of the film is replaced with an deep orange" (comment : "the whole point of the washed-out colors through most of the film was that, when Ash reached the final level, she found herself surrounded by brilliant color that invoked a comparison to the switch between black-and-white and color in The Wizard of Oz."). One 2012 responder replied "If you're looking for the original version, you'll have to get either the Japanese Region 2 DVD's (very expensive), the Japanese Region A Blu-ray (VERY expensive), or the Korean 2-disc Region 3 DVD. All feature the correct color scheme and accurate subtitles."
