Is the region free Casualties of War really the extended cut? It says it is but the running time is listed incorrect on it AFAIK

Here's the Amazon listing: https://www.amazon.de/Casualties-of-...A3JWKAKR8XB7XF

If you check Blu-ray.com it lists both, too.

Yep, compression is better on the DE disc. It has been added.

Not sure if this can be debated, but I find some inclusions to be slightly misleading.

I would expect "best PQ" notably to mean a noticeable improvement, like the use of a better source or correcting issues compared to other releases (like Shout's color correcting the Bruce Lee 4K movies).

What I don't expect is "best PQ" to mean a very slight improvement due to sometimes only a marginal compression improvement.

I understand how one could say "Hey ! Better IS better, no matter how much better." but while this is true, it also means things can be frustrating at a glance ("oh crap, this release was better but I bought this one instead, silly me !") while getting deeper into it would yield the opposite reaction ("it's written Best PQ but it's pretty much the same ! WTF ?!").

Moreover, such a list should be a way to easily navigate into what can be a dizzying global market with all its multiple releases and good vs worse labels, so one shouldn't have to dig around to find out the definitive stance on whether or not it's interesting to import.

For instance, I just read the above comment about Fletch and thought "What ?! Germany got a better source ?" but actually no, it's just the same godawful Universal-ly dated master but a negligible improvement in compression. 50 shades of crap.

Anyway.

Just my 2 cents.

Best PQ is Best PQ no matter how slice it. It doesn't matter if the difference is marginal or substantial. I never said Fletch got a better source, but it does have better PQ than the US disc due to a higher bitrate with AVC instead of VC-1. It also includes the original audio so it gets Best AQ as well.

Also, why am I defending my own list/thread that I maintain?

Just to be clear : my post was in no way trying to be sneaky or naughty or whatever. It's just a curious but genuine question about what I originally thought the list would contain versus what it also actually includes.

And again, I understand that. I was just pondering about how a marginal (or even sometimes less than marginal) difference should be enough to really make a difference.
Especially because it can drown out the comparisons where there is a clear-cut advantage of a release over another one.

My questions were towards this kind of things.

I originally was looking at it as a tool to find out big differences between releases, before finding out negligible ones are also included, making the list more difficult to go through.

One can't decide if a difference is "big" or not since we all have different eyes and setups. Better bitrate, compression and sometimes sharpness warrant a best PQ any day Koch is doing great work. Sure we would like brand new masters also but that won't happen every time.

So judge with your eyes and wallet and make your decision

Well, that's up to each individual who reads the list on page 1. If they take a look at caps-a-holic or another comparison and feel the upgrade is worth it then that is up to them.

How much benefit in PQ or AQ is not the argument here. What is important is that some titles look or sound better than others and it should be noted as such.

Ouch, that is one ugly looking mofo. I assume it's the same transfer that was used for the Swedish release?

Was a long time ago I checked it up and from what I can remember the quality was really bad and just that made the choice easy. Can't remember if it had english subs but german discs usually don't on foreign movies.

Too bad the dir cut never got a wider release but maybe it was a inofficial dir cut since no other markets got it.
