Correct me if i'm wrong, but wasn't it only until the late 90's early 00 when they started mixing the audio in 24-bit?

I'm still not sure which Red Heat looks better. The UK version is clearly very noisy, but the U.S. version has a lot of DNR applied to it that doesn't rear it's head in screenshots. I would say the UK release looks closer to how the film probably looked theatrically.

More like the mid aughts ('00s). Even then there were still 16-bit elements in the chain. |

Older movies are going to be analog, with a movie like Red Heat having Dolby SR printmasters as the source. When they digitized them, hopefully they went straight to 24-bit PCM, otherwise the lossless tracks may very well just be padded zeros from 16-bit masters. |

I think we talked about this movie before but didn't find it now on the list and the JP disc clearly have better compression so here it is again:
Chronicles of Riddick, The (Directors cut) US - VC-1 14009 kbps, DTS-HD MA 5.1 4364 kbps 24-bit (Region free) Best AQ JP - AVC 29661 kbps, Dolby TrueHD 5.1 1691 kbps 16-bit, no eng subs Best PQ JP is Sony with higher bitrate of the same transfer against US Universal and one of the lowest bitrates ever. On bigger screens there will be a bigger difference. I've wondered this as well and not just with 16 vs 24 bit. I've wondered, especially on some of the cheaper releases if it isn't just standard lossy upconverted. I mean when you see how little care some transfer gets it makes me wonder if they even really upgrade the sound at all.

There is little to no information with regards to the source of audio tracks, that I wouldn't be surprised if low quality maybe even lossy sources are used and then just encoded using a lossless format. Which is why releases with PCM tracks, you can pretty much guarantee its the original audio. Its a bit different if the film is an older film, i.e. no digital audio file exists, one needs to go back to the analog master tapes or get the audio from a release print/audio film print. Perhaps someone could shed more light on this matter? |

It looks virtually indistinguishable in motion. I own it
