The information for SOMETIMES THEY COME BACK is completely and wholly in error. The U.S. Olive release is 2.35:1, not 1.85:1. The Austrian disc is 2.35:1 only; no 1.85:1 version is included. Lastly, as proved by Caps-a-Holic, the U.S. release offers marginally superior encoding and, as such, is the preferred release for picture quality.

Hi! Thanks for your amazing work with this list.
Looking at caps-a-holic I couldn't see any difference between the UK MoC Double Indemnity and the FR Carlotta disc you picked as having the best PQ. The grain structure, etc looked identical to me. Obviously your eye has spent a lot more time uncovering minor but meaningful differences, so I'm hoping to learn more about what I'm missing. Thanks!! |

Yup, they are the same encodes. I uploaded the caps of the Carlotta disc to Caps a Holic, and it looks great. I don't have the Universal, but the Carlotta/Masters of Cinema disc has its issues: there's a flicker that's pretty apparent at points and is distracting. Also, in some shots, the grain looks pretty bad, appearing like dithering more so than actual grain (ironic in that film grain acts as a dither, but this looks similar to the dither seen on PS1 games).
However, I still prefer the look of the UK/FR disc- the Universal has been grain managed, and while it may show more detail, the overall look is too waxy for my taste. So yes, it is more detailed, but it doesn't look like film to my eyes. Honestly, something in-between both of them- the Universal restoration with actual film grain- would be ideal. Plus, the UK/FR disc has better black levels and doesn't have the bad posterisation the Uni disc has (see Cap 4 on Caps a Holic). |

I already have both the MoC and the US. (I like them each in different ways for the very reasons others have noted here). But I'm OCD enough to always want to have the best version (or versions) of films I really love, so I was about to order the Carlotta... Happy it seems I don't need to. ![]() |

Which one of these US BD releases of "The Thing" (1982) has better picture quality? The 2016 US Collector's Edition, or the 2018 US 4K Remaster Limited Edition?:
https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1=11009&d2=14490&c=4380 Can I have an expert opinion, please? HD Goofnut, or anyone? |

Which one of these two US BD releases of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (1956) has better picture quality? The 2012 Olive BD release, or the 2018 Olive Signature Edition?:
https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=1&x...8&l=1&i=8&go=1 The 2018 Signature Edition has higher bitrate, but it is darker. Which one has the better PQ? Expert opinion is needed. Thanks! |
