Do you guys know a great place to find out if a title contains any foreign lines, i.e not English?
I'm scared to purchase certain European releases as/if they've removed the hardcoded subtitles in English. They're meant to be there by the director... |

There are quite a few parameters to video encoding, I think you'd be amazed if you were see it, bitrate is just one parameter/outcome of 10's/100's more.
Bitrate doesn't really tell much, merely could you only tell about how efficient the compression was made, but that's about it. Video is made best once the right parameters are tweaked accordingly, taking the source material in mind. I'll let others fill in on the rest, I lack too much experience. |

If you're trying to compare 1080p vs 1080p releases, I'd recommend http://www.caps-a-holic.com com for screenshot comparisons. Note: You cannot judge 4K Ultra HD titles on that webite, they have been converted from HDR to SDR, inaccurately. Nobody would know what parameters were used, so nobody would be able to tell you that, we're not insiders. If you have access to screenshots you may look for edge enhancement, digital noise reduction, compression artifacts, macroblocking, colors, etc. Without, you could only tell if the cut of the movie is stored together with another cut, both being on the same disc, this is usually not optimal, as both cuts would need more compression to fit on one disc, it's generally better to have them split in a 2-disc release to give them the room they need, this is pretty much the only thing you can do if you can't find any other information about it. Now, Japanese releases are usually of higher video quality, at least from what I've seen, not just taking bitrate into account, I think they demand/prefer higher video quality over the audio, audio is often of lower resolution than the rest of the world, i.e. 16-bit instead of 24-bit, this to save on space and let the video take up more room on the disc. If you can hear the difference between the 24 and 16, and what your personal preferences aim to get, well, that's another discussion and completely up to you. And oh, yeah.. AVC video codec is usually better than VC-1, that could help quite often. Last edited by stmhlm; 09-07-2021 at 02:12 AM. |

I'm in the same boat here.
The japanese disc being the most pleasant one to my eyes, I sure hope their new release doesn't mimic the old US disc (and that, at least, the new release is the exact same as the old japanese one)!? I would like to be sure... but I guess I'll have to grab it and check it by myself. |

The Eureka "Johnny Guitar" is much more clunky compared to the Olive Signature (https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=2&x...8&l=1&i=0&go=1, https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=2&x...0&l=1&i=2&go=1, https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=1&x...5&l=1&i=7&go=1). The Signal One master for "The Seven-Ups" is not particularly good in-motion (fuzzy-looking grain and there's distortion that's noticeable in heads).

Just recently learned that Taika Waititi's "Boy" has a New Zealand blu-ray with a lot more extras than the US Kino disc, including a commentary track.
Not sure about the PQ, I haven't ordered it (yet). https://www.nzvideos.org/boy.html |
