Also to note is that this release is missing the stylized burnd in english subs for the foreign parts.

John Wick

NOR - AVC 36234 kbps, DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 3883 kbps 24-bit, same extras as US, no stylised English subs (Region B locked)

Once again Goofnut (et all) I really appreciate this thread and am so thankful you have put it together. I must look things up on it on a weekly basis. I wish I could contribute more and everytime I think I learn something new to share I find when I come here you all are way ahead of me already

So I've come here again and noticed this entry:

Ip Man
US - Cantonese DTS-HD MA 5.1 (Region A/B locked)
UK - Cantonese DTS-HD MA 5.1 (Region free)
HK - Cantonese LPCM 7.1 / Dolby TrueHD 7.1 / DTS-HD MA 7.1 (Region A locked) Best PQ/AQ

Anyone know any of the details about the Best PQ attribute on the HK? Trying to decide if its worth importing and replacing my US disc - I really enjoy this movie still

I have the HK set of Ip Man 1 & 2 and I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that they are the best in the world. The US and UK transfers have washed out colors along with lower bitrates. The HK transfers have much better colors and compression. BTW the best place to order HK discs is dddhouse.com.

Thank you for such a quick reply HD !!!

I just went to DDDhouse and they even have a special on the IPman1/2 combo set that worked out to about 17$ (little over 20 with shipping). Purchased got the Grandmaster HK 130min cut while I was there.

Yep, that's the set I have. If you're lucky it will come with a slipcover.

Poltergeist III
US - No release
DE - AVC 29994 kbps, DTS-HD MA 5.1 3666 kbps 24-bit, English subs (Region free)

Here are specs for the Japanese edition from Fox, which look identical to the German numbers above.

AVC @ 30 Mbps, 5.1 DTS-HD MA, English Menus

It's available very cheaply from Japan, though Fox's transfer has been filtered.

Did you buy it on release date or a few years later?..It may be unlikely to get a slipcover now since it was released in 2010.

Sorry for the rookie question but how do you obtain the bitrate and audio specs from a Blu-ray. Is it only via a pc/mac with a Blu-ray drive or is there normally a menu option on a Blu player?

Many players will show you the bit-rate and audio information as a title is playing (usually in the info OSD with the time remaining and such) but the bit-rate will change as you watch. When you scan a disc with a PC it averages the bit-rate throughout the entire movie and this is the number that people give as the "disc bit-rate".

A computer cannot give you the info in The List without specialized software, such as AnyDVD HD from Slysoft.

Looks to be the same as the AU:

Length: 1:37:34.723
Total Bitrate: 41.51 Mbps
Video: MPEG-4 AVC Video / 29994 kbps / 1080p / 23.976 fps / 16:9 / High Profile 4.1
Audio: English / DTS-HD Master Audio / 5.1 / 48 kHz / 3666 kbps / 24-bit (DTS Core: 5.1 / 48 kHz / 1509 kbps / 24-bit)

It appears Fox authored this disc for all English markets, there are even English menus. The film is presented in 1.85:1.

What are peoples thoughts on the current Fright Night (1985) releases? I'm trying to decide what I should do as I already own both the TT releases but am unsure about their accurate representation of the film.

I'm guessing that Sony will just use the same transfer worldwide so there is no point in looking further a field (JP or AU) for better transfers?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'm thinking about importing some of these superior transfers. Does anyone know if external blu-ray drives are also region locked like most players are? I use a mac with an external pioneer blu-ray drive to watch my blus.

PC drives are region locked. However, if you have AnyDVD HD you can play the raw .m2ts file, which bypasses any region locking. The only downside is that you lose subtitles, but unless it's a foreign language it's not a big deal.

I believe he said he's on Mac, and unless I'm very wrong AnyDVD doesn't make a blu-ray version for Mac.

That said, my LG/OWC blu-ray burner/player and MacGo's MacBluRayPlayer seem to play region B blu-rays easily and without problems. Not sure how to check if the Pioneer would be the same though...

Hmm. I use Mac Blu-ray Player as well. I suppose I'll just have to get a few inexpensive discs from a couple different regions and experiment. But I'm now guessing that maybe it's not the actual drives that are region locked. I was mainly concerned with region B, and your comment makes me feel mostly confident that I should be able to play region B.
