Update:

The Japanese BD has washed out colours and black levels. I saw the JP BD last year. It probably has most details, but the washed out colours/black levels makes it poor to watch.

Not sure these specs will be detailed enough again, but aside from the subtitles, which are highly important for dub viewers, there's basically no difference in any of the English friendly releases:

Durarara!!
US - English & Japanese LPCM 2.0 48 Khz 16-bit, full English subtitles, but no signs track, consequently several chatroom scenes become confusing and much of a mute character's dialogue is left untranslated
AU/UK (Collector's Edition) - English & Japanese LPCM 2.0 48 Khz 16-bit, some errors on full English subtitles, no signs track, consequently several chatroom scenes become confusing and much of a mute character's dialogue is left untranslated
UK (Standard Edition) - English & Japanese LPCM 2.0 48 Khz 16-bit, corrected full English subtitles, signs track available for dub

The reason for these updates is that since the JP and KO releases are OOP and hard to find, the HK release is the most accessible option for those craving the lossless audio. Please also note that all releases port over the extras from the SCE DVD.

I just watched my U.S. disc the other night and the lossy audio is really not that that bad. I wish I could say the same about the PQ. It looks more like video than film.

It would be much appreciated. Does the latter not suffer from any banding, or macroblocking at all?

The original specs were correct but they were listed for the wrong movie. Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai is actually the title of Miike's 2011 color remake of Kobayashi's Harakiri (1962). The specs are intended for the latter's Criterion and Eureka/Masters of Cinema releases.
My viewing and research indicates that while the Criterion boasts superior contrast and detail, it is noticeably cropped (and windowboxed) when compared with the Eureka. The UK edition also has more picture information along both side edges and the bottom of the frame. Overall, it is truer to the film's 2.35:1 ratio. 2.35:1
