I didn't see any macroblocking, as far as I understand the term. I certainly didn't see any obvious diff in the two pix (except for greater softness in the DE version. What should I be looking for that I might be missing?

There are compression issues on the U.S. disc. The DE disc has a lower bitrate, but it has a much better encode.

I'll take your word for it as you're much more knowledgeable in these matters than I am - and you know how I distrust caps over motion. That being said, the only difference I see in these caps is more (healthier ) grain and slightly greater sharpness in the pix from the US disc.

DE/NL - AVC 1.85:1 27883 kbps, DTS-HD MA 7.1 4239 kbps 24-bit, English subs (Region B locked) Best PQ/AQ

I added "NL" to the DE disc specs. NL & DE disc are 100% identical. I have the disc in my collection. It's from the same company.

But the DE/NL disc isn't superior either. Originally in the intro there is a burned image with English text:



If you don't watch this movie with subtitles on; that screen stays black. With no mention we are 8 months later. A let down. With subtitles on, it will be in subtitle style and just placed in the center bottom.

The release company: Splendid is also notorious to translate burned in location names into German, if it is only released in Germany.

Hell, for as cheap as I could probably get it from Germany I might as well do the same. Even if there isn't a massive difference. There's several that I need to get around to importing from Germany here in the near future.

It's only when you look at the zoomed in portion you can even really tell the issue exists on titles like these. Looking at the full picture/screenshots, the reaction I had was the same. Better grain/slghtly sharper on US (and in a good way). In my opinion, that makes it no big deal to stick with the US release.

Look for blocky, pixelated areas instead of fine grain. In the third pic look at the dark area of the shield. In the fourth picture, look at the capes.
