I wouldn't want virtually any amount of development cost or % to be spent towards wide viewing technology on future sets. Just my vote.

Additionally, it's always fun when telling your friends, family or co-workers or whatever, that you actually buy your movies and on physical discs no less.

"What are you buying "DVDs" for, you know you can catch that on Netflix, iTunes or Disney+, right?"

It's all about the profit. The margins just aren't there for heavy investment anymore in LED. We really are in this stupid limbo of OLED or bust. The problem being with OLED of course is that's not really a screen fit for the mainstream.

You can try and hard sell all you want an OLED to your self employed plumber that's got some extra cash burning in his pocket.

But why would he bother dropping 2 grand on a TV that needs very specific viewing conditions for watching Derby County playing every weekend, and some Netflix.

When he can pocket most of his cash for taking the family to Disney World by getting a cheaper TV that will do all the aforementioned competently in a bright living room environment.

For most average buyer as long as it has all the buzz words (HDR, 4K, smart TV) then all the sets are equivalent. Why pay more? Also when you go to Costco or Sam's Club all displays are show in bright warehouse lighting which is nothing like your home viewing environment.

Precisely the reason why TCL and Vizio enjoy such a large market share.

Can't make an ignorant person care. Even if you want to dive deeper and teach them something, they're usually just looking to push back.

It's my biggest pet peeve among the whole hobby too. 'Murcians that care about only two specs: How big it is and how much did it cost. Enjoy your $300 Black Friday TV that you can finally admit to yourself that it sucks in two years.

Yeah, it's a huge problem.

There are also throngs of enthusiasts and salespeople out there that think OLEDs are all that matters too.

But I do think the manufacturers are missing a trick when it comes to all this wide angle stuff though, as combining an IPS panel with a proper individually dimmed FALD backlight seems like the most obvious solution. I mean all LCD panels are inherently shit for blacks, it's just that VA is a little bit less shit than IPS which is why VA is so common in the higher end sets, but when combined with the kind of backlight coverage AND per-zone control that the ZD9 has then even IPS would render the sort of stunning black and contrast that I see on the ZD9 along with a wider (if still not perfect) viewing angle.

Trouble is, no-one wants to do this kind of intense development on regular LCD backlights any more, that Sony have not improved on the ZD9 in that respect after five full years of further development is such a shame because the bones are already there, it just needs a bit more tweaking. Yeah, IPS + more advanced backlight solutions is a great idea. But as you and others note, the interest currently isn't there on the part of Sony.

Not just the mainstream. People who game heavily - especially certain genres like JRPGs that are filled with all manners of on-screen text at all times - aren't really part of the mainstream. But OLED is risky for them too.

Like you say, we're in this weird transitional time right now. LCD is being neglected and phased out of the high-end (or at least pushed to the back), with OLED dominating. But then the trouble with OLED is you can't use your TV however you want whenever you want, not if you want to keep it for more than a couple years.

So now we wait for things like mini-LED to catch on and enhance LCD's contrast performance, and/or for OLED panels to become a lot more robust and long-lived.

I think you're speaking facts. Its a shame that some people take it personal and get upset when you say anything that can be perceived as negative about OLED.

I bought this new in 2016, and I can say that on my 55" XBR 930D, there is less than 20 hours use --because once I got the ZD9, I never looked back.

Anyone know what These are worth on the secondary market with super light use?

A fair price ? I would say at least around 1k if it’s really mint and very few hours of use. Of course you Can ask for more but not sure it will sell, it all depends if you are willing to sell not only locally.

Yeah. Other than being 4K, I don't even remember why I chose that model (bright HDR, and 3D I think). At any rate selling it on E-Bay with Shipping is going to be a headache, but if that is what it takes, then I guess I'll do it.

Nice to see this thread active again. I still haven't found a worthy replacement (even from Sony).

Better get used to waiting and in the meantime take extra special care for your Z9D. It's still going to be a while before there will be a worthy replacement...

Heh, it's funny how this TV was so ahead of its time that those who want a new Sony LCD (or LCD in general) that can either match or surpass it now essentially have to wait for technology to catch up to it.

Virtually every single OLED and Plasma TVs are better than this antique LCD, IMO. I might even prefer a 2020 QLED. There are plenty of options.

It's not just the amount of zones (or LEDs in this case), but I also need my BMD (on a per LED level basis, not zones ).
