A friend of mine saw this at the NY Film Festival, and told me this was easily the best film of the year. And he's already seen an early screening of Foxcatcher and Whiplash, so it must be pretty damn great. He also thought that Michael Keaton is his early favorite for Best Lead Actor.

And do they think it will win the Academy Award for Best Picture, even if it deserves it after all the Award season movies are out?

Dream on.

It's never been about the best, but the most maneuvering and arm twisting of powerful industry players behind the scenes.

The last film I thought totally and unreservedly deserved the honor was "No Country For Old Men."

That said, I cannot wait to see this movie!!!

Has Michael Keaton won an Oscar before? I think he deserves it.

This film will likely mark the first time he's been nominated.

Just saw Birdman this morning. I didn't think any film could top The Lego Movie this year, kids' or adults', animation or live-action. I'm pretty sure Birdman did just that.

I can't wait to see it either. Michael Keaton got a lot of early talk for clean and sober back in 1988 right before batman. I don't know if there was talk of him with he did Jackie brown. this is the first time about some positive talk of Oscar buzz. I hope he wins. Its opening wider this week. here is a link to Cinemark theaters.

Wow. I expected good but... Wow. A shoe-in for Best Picture and Best Director.

My only complaint is that every side character's plots were dropped in the last third to focus on Keaton, not bad, but just a bit annoying.

Will try to get a YouTube review up shortly, but in the meantime:

Quote:
From a technical filmmaking perspective, Birdman is fantastic. The way this movie is shot and the acting are both terrific. Although everyone is naturally talking a lot about Keaton, who is good, Edward Norton and Emma Stone stole the show for me. Man, it was good to see Edward Norton crushing it again - got reminded of his performance from Primal Fear at times.

Despite what a marvel this is in terms of filmmaking, the story didn't always have me hooked. First two acts are solid and entertaining, but the third act tries to take some risks, which while I appreciate, didn't really pay off for me. I found the direction the story headed to be quite distracting, over-the-top, and unnecessary. Same goes for the ending of this movie - what the heck is that supposed to mean? I'm sure some hardcore cinephiles will love it these non-traditional story arcs, but not for me.

Regardless of my criticisms for how the plot panned out, I once again thought Birdman was expertly crafted and I did enjoy myself the majority of the time. Recommend.

I'm going to a film festival in Poland next month, and the opening film is this...I was so excited up until I found out this is being shown on the 15th and I'm not flying down until the 16th.

Hopefully this'll end up being shown more than once, but I'm doubtful, that's not usually the case with Opening Night films is it.

Caught both whiplash and this. If you haven't seen them, stop whatever you're doing and go watch both. NOW! I loved how Birdman looked at the superhero genre and questioned it as a degradation of acting as an art form. Keaton and Norton were spectacular and funny as hell.

Same thing for me since I saw the first images of the Birdman's costume. Unfortunately, I have to be really patient since the release in France is scheduled for February 25th, boohoo...
