It's an annual tradition for me watching this film the week of Thanksgiving. One thing a friend in real life told me earlier tonight that this was "The Big Chill" of the 90's films, in terms of a big ensemble cast and not to mention Kevin Kline was in both films (and ironically both films have a title that has to do with something "cold" and are Criterion movies too!). Sigourney Weaver's physical beauty hit its peak in this film in my opinion. She looks just incredibly amazing in The Ice Storm. |

I just grabbed Red River with the BF coupon. I'm basically paying 27 bucks for it after shipping and exchange, which is still cheaper than Amazon.ca's 30 dollar price right now. Amazon charges me 15% tax. ![]() Getting Red River benefits more than just me, as my mother will get the DVDs. I wish my other 13 titles and my Howards End replacement copy would get here. I was told Canadian shipping was quicker, and 90% of my items shipped Nov. 13/14. I'm glad Amazon doesn't have the sales like this, I'd be really poor, or whining about how I can't buy any. I only partook in this sale because I scrapped my old car. |

I was thinking about picking it up as well but a few pages ago people were complaining about the cropping job done on White. Is it that big of an issue or does the film still work even though it's framed wrong?

Dekalog would be an absolute knock out if they did it. Those films are just incredible, Kieslowski is one of the greatest of all time. |

Somewhere around the third mile of the Atlanta Half Marathon this morning, one of the volunteer aid stations had music going, and the song was "You Can't Always Get What You Want" by The Rolling Stones. I immediately thought of The Big Chill, since I watched it last weekend, and revisited it for a second time late on Monday night. That movie is ruining a lot of songs for me, but in a good kind of way. That Rolling Stones track is an odd one to hear during a race, since most volunteer aid stations are usually playing stuff like "Eye of the Tiger" or upbeat dance songs during these events.
I was compelled to watch The Big Chill a second time earlier this week, because it got me thinking about a friend of mine whom I had known from first grade all the way through college. This friend committed suicide back in February, and nobody has a clue as to why he did it. I drove down to my hometown for the funeral, and, although my high school/college friends and I did not stay for the weekend in a big house and hook up with one another like the people in The Big Chill, the experience of reconnecting with people whom you knew in more idealistic times is one that came to mind as I watched the film. On a happier note... I just used my Barnes & Noble 30% off code to buy Love Streams. It seems wasteful to use this coupon in conjunction with the sale to buy a mere single-film set like this, but I honestly could not think of any other titles that I wanted. I'm pretty well stocked up on the Criterion front right about now. I wish that Criterion would hurry up and release the 1980 John Cassavetes film, Gloria, because I want to revisit it and relive some childhood memories of seeing the film in HBO. Speaking of which, I mighta oughta get around to watching the Five Films set now. |
