Limelight Blu-ray REVIEW

Outstanding restoration. If you have the Park Circus release, do not hesitate to upgrade.

What stood out the most was its relevancy. I don't think we will live in a period where there isn't conspiracies and government secrets.

Hopefully in the film world (post-ending),
[Show spoiler]Stiller will destroy the program.
I've tried watching it 3 times and turned it off all 3 times. I think maybe I got an hour into it. And this coming from someone who loves long Rivette films. I'm determined someday to get through it, but I don't like what I've seen so far.

At that price point, it looks like it might just be four discs, too. Thanks for sharing!

I've only seen Ray's Charulata (which I quite enjoyed), so I think I'm going to blind-buy the Apu Trilogy.

Random question here, but is there any chance Criterion will release Chaplin's 1928 film "The Circus" in the future? Seems like it'd fit right in with the rest of their Chaplin releases.

They mentioned The Kid in the recent AV Club article, and I've seen some speculation of a Chaplin silent box in the future. I'm optimistic we'll see it someday.

Criterion owns the rights to the entire Chaplin catalogue IIRC, so yes.

I hope so. I've never seen it but I really want to and I don't want to spend 30 bucks on the OOP DVD.

Has to be super packed with extras to justify 4 discs, i think the Rossellini set also used 4 discs, but that had multiple cuts of two of the films.

But most other 3 film sets are usually 3 discs even if they have a great amount of extras like the Three Colors set.

I think that with all that went into the restoration, there's no way they don't pack this full of extras. Four discs is very possible and it'll be worth every penny.

The Kid is one of my favorite Chaplin films. Absolutely heartbreaking and hilarious. That would be a first-day purchase for me.

On another note, has anyone ever had to exchange a disc for anything other than bronzing problems? I picked up a copy of The Wages of Fear from Hastings over the weekend, and when I got it home, it wouldn't play. I noticed a little of what looks like oxidation/layer separation on the bottom of the disc (no bronze color; it looks more like a tiny spot of what happens to a cd-r when it's exposed to extreme temperatures). Normally, I would just take it back to the store and exchange it, but the store I bought it at is over an hour away and I don't plan on being out that way any time soon. Is this something I should email Jon Mulvaney about?

I think it would be an awesome extra if they had the footage of damaged films included so you could see the effort that was made to fix the films - even if they are DVD quality - just seeing the damage done and then seeing the new transfers!

Actually reminds me of a film someone made using damaged film stock, was so creepy and eery - I've forgotten name now lol

Not likely what you were thinking of but the first scene in Seijun Suzuki's Tokyo Drifter was shot with damaged stock because Suzuki thought, why not try that out?

Haha cool - I wish I could remember the name of the film now, it was so creepy, especially the music - I think it's quite hard to find on DVD but it's really fascinating!

Also anyone know why some releases are starting to feature booklets? Yet others just leaflets? Limelight has a booklet

Are you thinking of "Begotten"? I don't know if it was shot on damaged stock but it was shot on 8mm and had a damaged, heavily post-processed look. Very eerie film from memory.

In film class some dude showed the first 10 minutes of that film as his clip to present to the class. Just about everyone wanted to toss him out the door. LOL.

I love that scene, it really starts the movie with a feeling that anything could happen. He was so creative in what he tried. He seemed to not have any fear of things not working.

Does Criterion own the rights to other Pasolini (besides Salo and the Trilogy of Life)? Any hints/change we could see those in the future?

It's been a couple years since the last Pasolini release (Trilogy) and I'm ready for more!
