I had a little time last night so I popped in a short, English-speaking film that wouldn't drive my wife nuts while she graded papers. Watched The Palm Beach Story and liked it, but not nearly as much as Sullivan's Travels. I'm sure the film was somewhat shocking for the time in its depiction of marriage and Claudette Colbert open discussion of her sex appeal.

It was also fun watching the supplement with Bill Hader and listening to him rave on Sturges. I would like to see more Criterion videos from him in the future. He seems very dialed in on Criterion with this, the vault video and his Documentary Now! show.

My Moonrise Kingdom pre-order should arrive at any time today. Can't wait to get a new digipack in my hands.

Mine is getting here tomorrow along with Breaker Morant and Mister Johnson. These two haven't exactly lit the entire world on fire, but I am still really looking forward to them.

This may speak to my feelings about Wes Anderson, but I'm more interested in the packaging of Moonrise Kingdom than the film, but I'm going in with an open mind.

Have to disagree with Dr. Svet's assessment of Moonrise Kingdom. Fantastic film, like all of Anderson's work. Can't wait to add this disc to my collection.

Does anyone know if Barnes and Noble will be carrying Moonrise Kingdom in store tomorrow and how much it will be?

I can't see why they won't be. I'm sure if you do in store pick up or call direct tomorrow they'll give you the price. There will be a 4 day 10% off sale starting on the 25th and members get an extra 10%.

I don't know if you've seen it or not, but "Final Cut: The Making and Unmaking of Heaven's Gate" is a terrific documentary on the making of the film. I believe it's up on Youtube. I wish they would have included it on the Criterion disc, but that wasn't going to happen with Cimino overseeing the content on the Criterion release.

While I disagree too since I think Moonrise Kingdom is one of his best, I do think that what he mentions applies to The Grand Budapest Hotel, also not a fan of Bottle Rocket and Darjeeling Limited, but they are ok.

I think this is the place most likely to get an answer, so here it goes.

This weekend I watched a film called Going Places by Bertrand Blier, a director I had never heard of before, it was a fantastic mixture of comedy, crime and even some humanity in the weirdest of places, I recommend everyone with Netflix to watch it before it expires on October 1st, although be warned that the movie is misogynistic, politically incorrect and tends to show a lot of nudity, both men but more women , also if you need to like the main characters to enjoy it, not recommended.

Anyway I was wondering if anyone is familiar with this French director, and wondered if you guys have some recommendations of other of his works, it appears this movie I mention was released by Kino, but there really isn't much talk about it that I could find.

Or you can read the Steven Bach book "Final Cut: Art, Money, and Ego in the Making of Heaven's Gate, the Film that Sank United Artists".
Great read.

Good call - there is something in what Dr Svet says, although I love both of those films. I view this un-reality as simply being part of Anderson's style.

I've seen a couple of his movies and really liked them - Buffet Froid which is a black comedy with Depardieu and features a jaw droppingly beautiful scene set in a reservoir or lake; also Trop belle pour toi which satirises standard notions of beauty (and ironically I saw it at a cinema club screening in 16 mm where the projectionist forgot the anamorphic lens so everything was comically squashed!).

Sorry JW007, I didn't see your message. Here is my reply:

Bruce Beresford has a relatively good reputation in this country, mostly because of what he did in the 70's. Breaker Morant and Don's Party are both highly regarded films that are part of the Australian film canon, and The Club is also well respected. The Barry McKenzie films, however, continue to divide people. The rest of his work is not really talked about much, especially his Hollywood films. He is not really seen as a 'master' by critics and film buffs here, if that's what you mean. He gets plenty of vet respect though.

I don't recall Mister Johnson getting rave reviews here. I was pretty young when it came out so I could be wrong, but I don't ever hear critics or film buffs talking about that film when Beresford's name is mentioned.

This certainly seems to ring true, as the UK Blu-ray (not overseen by Cimino) features an hour or so of that doc on the disc.

It actually starts on the 24th, so that's one day earlier to get it.

The managers at my store are trying to figure out how exactly the 20% off for members will work with our bestsellers (which are already 30% off for non-members, and 40% off with the membership). While I'd love for there to be 50% off for hardcover bestsellers, that seems highly unlikely. But, since Moonrise Kingdom probably won't be discounted anyway, it should just be 20% off.

Hey other Los Angeles area folk -- UCLA Film Archive is screening several CC classics over the next few weeks, including:

Oct 02 - The Red Shoes (https://www.cinema.ucla.edu/events/2...ry-celebration)
Oct 03 - Gilda (https://www.cinema.ucla.edu/events/2...ry-celebration)
Oct 16 - Night of the Hunter (https://www.cinema.ucla.edu/events/2...hunter-macbeth)
Oct 19 - My Darling Clementine (https://www.cinema.ucla.edu/events/2...-yellow-ribbon)

Never been but I can't NOT see Gilda in theaters.

Anyone else been to the UCLA Film Archive? Yay / nay? When I was a student at UC Berkeley, I went to their film archives pretty often and really loved it.

<----- Big fan of Buffet Froid. I've seen Going Places and I think Get Out Your Handkerchiefs. However, it was 15+ years ago so I can't really remember anything. May have seen some others. I think I found him a little disappointing because I loved Buffet Froid and wanted his other films to be great but, to my recollection, were more of a mixed bag. I'd like to revisit them though. I'm sure Pro-B has probably seen most of them and can give a better assessment.
