Ignatiy from the AV Club just published a really nice overview of the significant rereleases we saw in 2016--many of which were given Criterion releases.

I have One Eyed Jacks coming in the mail soon. I really can't wait to revisit this masterpiece on bluray.

Where is the self-loathing? Half your posts are you congratulating yourself about something.

This is so wrong. I love the films so much that I keep them all sealed and unopened.

Because the original poster said that 1/2 of his collection consists of Criterion titles?

About 30 of the S&S top 50 films from 2012 have had Criterion releases. What does that say about Criterion fans?

Or is the S&S poll a bunch of hipster garbage too?

I don't know, I can't speak for somebody else. If you're itching to find out, send him a PM.

I was just answering the question about reputation. Nobody said anything about hipster "garbage". The comment was not directed at the films themselves.

From my experience, hipsters actually tend to slag sacred cows and old classics. You know, being contrarian is hip. I doubt most hipsters really like Criterion or older movies that much.

I find it's more like they come with something obscure or offbeat in order to appear intellectually or culturally superior. Like eschewing mainstream films (and denigrating those who watch them) in favour of, say, a foreign film from the 1950s.

A lot of the great films Criterion release are only "obscure" because they are old, a lot of them were very popular at the time they were released.

After having seen a lot of them I am one of those who think Cinema in general is not as good as it used to be, sure there are some great movies from time to time, but not really at the same level most of the time, it's not our fault, it's better than to live in ignorance of all the great cinema that has already been made.

Curiously, yesterday I was watching the supplements of The Double Life of Veronique, and in the interview with composer Zbigniew Preisner, he seemed to think similar, he mentions how now that he talks with directors he feels there is something lost in the way they approach to make movies these days.

Criterion stereotype = hipsters who like 1950s films??? Huh?? Hipsters don't like 50s films. That's why they're hipsters. They're too cool for that "old" stuff.

From what I remember, Hipsters just don't like the mainstream. If something is popular, they automatically dislike it.

I don't know, people like to label people hipsters for having snobby attitudes towards tastes.

Seeing all these middle aged men argue about what hipsters like/what they are has been illuminating.

Criterion have released a variety of films, many were popular at the time, many weren't. My comments with regards to hipsters are specific to the idea that if you were to say that you enjoyed Satyajit Ray's The Music Room, a hipster would reply that that's too mainstream and pick some ridiculously obscure Ray film saying that it's a far superior piece of cinema.

actually we're arguing about what the "Criterion stereotype" is. I wasn't aware there was one. I was told it was "hipsters". That was illuminating.

Well it's actually going to be really quite telling as to who takes great offence to that description. Like I said, don't shoot the messenger. Someone asked what the reputation was and I stepped up to the plate to answer. It's a large part why a LOT of people who are Criterion fans don't post on this thread.

Seeing as hipsters have arguably been around since the early 2000s, it stands to reason many of the members here in their 30s or early 40s could have been hipsters once!
