Yeah, Eyes Wide Shut is my second favourite after 2001 as well. Under-appreciated by many I think, it's equal parts beautiful and unsettling I find. For all the talk of Kubrick being a "cold filmmaker", I'm always deeply affected emotionally by his films, and EWS almost most of all.

Eyes Wide Shut needs more love and in a perfect world, a Criterion release.

Eyes Wide Shut and It's a Wonderful Life are my two favorite Christmas films and the only two that are guaranteed to be watched during this time every year.

Speaking of Christmas films, I need to really throw in Fanny and Alexander and watch it again. I really loved it the first (and only) time I watched it.

I too agree that its one of his greatest films... To me, 2001 is still my favorite of his, followed by either Eyes Wide Shut or The Shining (can't decide which one I like more). Prob. Eyes Wide Shut though, for re-watchability.

Not sure what its chances of getting a spine are, but I formally endorse The Celluloid Closet to join the collection. I'd seen parts of it on YouTube, and it's now available in its entirety on the FilmStruck channel (not the CC channel). Very insightful documentary on representations of LGBT characters in film, and even features clips from some CC titles like Gilda, My Own Private Idaho, Red River, and more.

If it did get a release, it'd be great to see an updated take on how far cinema has come, with films like Brokeback Mountain getting mainstream critical and commercial success.

Any ideas on whether it would join the CC? The previous DVD is out of print, and the rights are owned by Sony Pictures Classics.

Saw on Reddit that iTunes is having a Criterion sale, 100 titles available for $9.99 each. Good selection with some of the best known films as well as notable new releases. No extras as far as I can tell, but handy if there's any CC films you absolutely need a digital copy for.

Can't figure out how to link to it, but if you go to the iTunes Store, then Movies, and scroll down you should see the banner for it.

One title that caught my eye is an HD version of Le Samourai!

I love the scene where Larry & Mrs. Samsky smoke weed while Today plays in the background. Im only 28 but I am a HUGE Jefferson Airplane fan. OMG!

Actually one of my Top 10 favorite scenes ever.

Ever since I saw Sweet Smell of Success 30 years ago, I've wanted to live in that version of New York.

It's my second (or maybe third) favorite to A Clockwork Orange. It's the perfect movie to watch on a late, cold night. Hoping to catch it on 35mm when I'm up in New York for the holidays.

Eyes Wide Shut is good, but there's like 8 Kubrick films that are better than it.

It's not my absolute favorite Kubrick, probably an outside chance at my top 5 though. But I have absolutely no problem with someone putting it at #1 either. I like people with different opinions like that.

That's funny, I also watched Eyes Wide Shut again yesterday. I've wanted to revisit the film for a couple of weeks now but haven't had time. I've seen the film 4 times now and I'm NEARLY convinced it's Kubrick's best film. I still think very highly of The Shining, though

I love everything about it apart from the scenes near the end with Pollack where everything slows to a halt.

So dreamy though, and a fitting end to an illustrious career. Will rewatch it before Christmas as I always do.

Let's try a hypothetical Criterion exercise!

Let's say Criterion announces that moving forward they will focus on releasing only new releases/acquisitions rather than upgrading more of their previous dvd releases (not a huge stretch considering their recent upgrade output). However, before they do they are going to upgrade 10 more of their in print dvd releases to bluray, and they want everyone to send their 10 votes in for which releases they'd want upgraded.

Which 10 would you choose?

Antione Daniel box set
Film Trilogy by Ingmar Bergman (Through a Glass Darkly, Winter Light, Silence)
Haxan
La Strada
Le Notti Bianche
Le Samourai
Loves of a Blonde
Passion of Joan of Arc
Scenes from a Marriage
Vampyr

although I have the UK set of Antoine Daniel and Joan of Arc (as well as the Rosselini War trilogy, Knife in the Water, Human Condition,Testament of Dr Mabuse, Dreyer set), so I could easily replace those with Virgin Spring and Red Beard

Tough choices. I started out with an easy two dozen. Whittled it down to these ten. In alphabetical order:

Andrei Rublev
Berlin Alexanderplatz (my one concession to a large set)
Gate of Flesh
The Human Condition
The Last Wave
Magnificent Obsession
The Passion of Joan of Arc
La Strada
Ugetsu
Z

I wish you had warned me about the scene where Llewyn
[Show spoiler]hits the cat with the car and the cat drags itself off the side of the road to die in the woods.

That scene really messed me up in the head.

I have a soft spot for cats.

Last night I had a dream about my beloved cat, El Basito.

She died six years ago.

She was a real b*@ch.

...but I loved her.
