I saw Showgirls in the theater and thought it was a glorious trainwreck; that Verhoeven claimed to have made it with serious intentions and claimed his Razzie award in person shows him for the genius he is.

As for Criterion tackling this, they did Valley Of The Dolls and it's sequel so who knows...in the meantime can't wait to see Elle.

BEWARE!
2 copies I got from Amazon had no booklets. I emailed Criterion and they had just found out before I did so. I don't know why Amazon has not flagged the title yet.

Criterion Survey

With less than a week before next week's announcement, I would like to take a survey.

If you could chose any one film from the ones hinted in the New Year's drawing to be released first, which one would it be?

For me, it would be Stalker.

Personally, I just want another Harold Lloyd to get announced, preferably Girl Shy.

Ghost World. This has been one of my most wanted titles for the last six years or so.

Yes. It has been my #1 want for quite sometime. My German Blu ray is up on eBay in anticipation.

I'd take Polyester.

Even though that clue maybe a bit of a stretch, it seems possible.

Besides.

It's John Waters.

Even though I really shouldn't know who he is.

I'd like to watch some of his films.

And so Polyester it should be.

I'd go with They Live By Night.

Nicholas Ray and film noir go hand in hand.

I am, however, practically drooling at the mouth in anticipation of Sixteen Candles and Ghost World, though.

Is Looking for Mr. Goodbar a possible Criterion title? I can't remember exactly where I heard that or saw that but I feel like I remember someone saying something

Frankly speaking I'm torn between GHOST WORLD and 16 ANDLES

What's a man to do
When he's loving two
But he can't keep his heart
In two different places...

Stalker for me too. We all know it's coming, and I held out on the AE release because of it.

No interest in Sixteen Candles--it's a good movie and all and certainly one of the most seminal 80 high-school movies, but it never really captivated me all that much. I should probably keep my eye on it though--would be a great present for mom.

Never saw Ghost World--will probably have to try before I think about a buy.

Um...what else was suggested? Tree of Life would be a no-brainer for me, but I wasn't sure if that was a serious guess.

It was a false rumor from the 2013 New Year newsletter, which became Life Is Sweet.

Man, I never read the stickied threads because they're buried in the stuff like "POST PHOTOS OF YOUR COLLECTION." I'm sad I missed the several pages of debate on Sixteen Candles. That was one of my favorite movies for a long time! I don't recall anything being "rapey," apart from one obvious plot machination towards the end. The obvious part where the girl and guy wake up after having drunk sex (at least, the movie does seem to recognize how bad that was so it acts like Ted was also drunk and doesn't remember it) and she's like "I don't remember it but I bet I liked it!!!!" And of course now that I walk through the movie in my mind, the boyfriend shipped her off with the implication that might happen, and prior to that said something like "SHE'S PASSED OUT IN MY ROOM AND I COULD VIOLATE HER IF I WANTED TO, BUT I'M NOT INTO THAT KIND OF GIRL ANYMORE." Ah well. I feel like half the jokes in that whole thing were about how pathetic Ted was for being moronically sex mad. Like, I think after that violate line, which is SUPPOSED to sound bad, he says something like WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!, which always read to me as "this guy is one horny idiot."

Besides that, it's generally good-hearted. I remember reading an interview with Gedde Watanabe where he finished the movie, thought he'd done a good job and was proud of it, and then was surprised when other asians started blasting him for it! I guess he didn't have an accent himself and just thought he was doing "wacky funny party guy" or something and hadn't personally had any issue with it. So, I guess it was partly an asian oppressing asians there! Oh well. I sure wouldn't show it to anyone under the age of 25 or any asian people, but I still really like the movie and so do most (white people) I show it to And what I think of when I think of that movie and stuff I find funny are not just the asian stereotype, but the blasting of the "oily bohunk" and the awful blonde sister with the muscle relaxants and joan cusack in the neck brace and john cusack and the other nerd following around Farmer Ted, and ESPECIALLY the hilarious old people. If the movie's anything, it's ageist!! I love when the idiot grandpa starts talking to Dong like he's a dog and clapping after every phrase. And then what REALLY stuck with me is that it's pretty much a movie where everyone actually wants to get along and there aren't really any villains. Most of the conflict just comes from misunderstandings and people being oblivious. Farmer Ted having the heart-to-heart with Jake, that scene with Samantha and her dad on the couch, etc were so unlike what I was used to seeing in 90s comedies, where they always had to have hissable bad guys. Or even all of the other Hughes movies, like the principals in Ferris Bueller/Breakfast Club, or Chet in Weird Science, or whatever that jerky guy's name was in Pretty in Pink!

Now I will be banned for resurrecting a dead argument. I just really love that movie and have for many years. Yet I have a hard time believing it might be in the Criterion collection.

In other Criterion news, I got Cat People, Squid and the Whale, Punch Drunk Love, and Blood Simple for Christmas and still haven't watched any of them. I am a bad person.

I'm looking forward to Blow-Up. I have seen a lot of disparaging remarks about it over the last couple years saying it dated very badly, but I still frequently see it labelled as an influence on various things I like, and I'd been putting off buying the DVD. I guess it paid off here!
