The Naked Prey and Sisters are essential upgrades, fantastic news, and another reason I always simply wait for the domestic releases as, although I am region free, I prefer having US versions that will play on all my players and friends' players. US releases eventually happen for the most part. And the imports lose almost of their value immediately once the US versions come out (imports are almost impossible to sell off at that point), even if the import may be superior in certain ways.
Shampoo is probably one of Hal Ashby's most bland films (to me), but I'll still eventually upgrade from the DVD. It's decent and funny enough, I suppose, but I'd much rather get his The Landlord. Way better film. The Princess Bride was never my thing, and I'm being nice. Absolutely no way I'm going near that, but I know it has its legions of fans, so it's all good. I think this was a good month overall. I still want a CC domestic of Onibaba, plus Haneke's films like the original Funny Games, Benny's Video, or whatever. I'm actually enjoying the upgrades of DVD to Blu more than the "new releases", at least from Criterion. Double-dips by other labels, especially Blu to a supposedly better Blu by the same company, not so much. |

I never agreed with the hype surrounding Shampoo. I understood it, Warren Beatty, Hollywood royalty (pre-Ishtar), but I never really thought it was that great. Having said that, I’ll be picking it up in a future sale. Lee Grant and, especially, Jack Warden make it interesting, and as a time capsule of the period it has its charms. I’ll be looking forward to a revisit.
The Princess Bride? No desire to double-dip, thank you very much. |

THE NAKED PREY!!! Finally, after years of having this in the top 3 of my wishlist for Region A Blu-ray releases. I am speechless.....doin' happy dances all day after reading this great news!
![]() This movie is brutal. I first watched it on television as a kid in the mid-1970s. It scared the crap out of me back then and I have never forgotten it. I caught it right after it began while channel surfing one afternoon during summer break. I watched a few minutes and got pulled right in. This was my introduction to Cornel Wilde, who since that day early in my movie fan career has become one of my favorite actors. Luckily I was in my bedroom watching it on my own TV because I am sure if my mom had seen me viewing this on the living room set she would have turned it off and sent me outside (this was back in the days before video games when kids actually spent the whole day outside in the summer...unless they were inside glued to the TV watching exciting entertainment like this). Here is the official trailer. It is narrated almost like one of those nature shows I used to watch in the 1970s....the voiceover kind of reminds me of Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, except Marlin Perkins gets tortured to death while Jim Fowler has to run through the brush butt naked. I guess it depends on your patience levels, tastes and what you define as a film you'd like to own. If I knew Lady without Camelias, for example, would get a region A release one day, I probably would have never bought a region free player, but knowing that one title may never see the light of day here was more than enough for me to go region free. I don't want to bore you with a list of well liked titles that are only region b and will remain only region b, but they're out there. |

Regarding Shampoo, isn't it one of only several instances where an original Beatles song is used?
I only watched Shampoo once, back in college (pretty meh, but I'd revisit it as a rental), yet I think back on it every time I hear Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Isn't it next to impossible to license Beatles music for films? Yesterday pops up a bit in Once Upon a Time in America. Or am I believing an urban legend? |

Once again, I'm region free so never had an issue with buying such a player, but I also feel it was pointless and a waste of money. The titles I've bought overseas that eventually got a Region A release in the USA, I can barely sell the imports now even for a penny. It's that bad. And then I bought the much superior US releases on Blu. What a waste of money the majority of those imports I bought were (thankfully not that many), especially with all their ugly multi-language covers and multi-lingual menu screens. Blech. But to each their own. We're all huge movie fans so spend your $$$ where you want. |

I know I can sound like a bit of a jerk (to say the least) the way I post sometimes. I keep trying to change for the better and act nicer, but I think I'm fully baked at my old age - ha! Anyway, I think I've sold off most of my Region B's at this point, ya not for a penny as I exaggerated, but definitely way less than I bought them for. And most of them came out on Region A eventually. Maybe not all, but my to buy list for Region A is so long still, that even thinking of spending on Region 2 is not in my wheelpark anymore, unless there was a film that I was really, really dying for and only on Region 2. So far, there is not one that I can see. Sorry. But I love hearing about multi-region fans and hearing about what else is coming out elsewhere and not here. It's all good. I wish every movie was available everywhere in HD. That would be incredible. ![]() |

I finally got myself a Multi-Region player in 2015, and it was easily the best gift I've given myself in a long time. I've never had to worry about Regions again. Got a nice little 130.00 player and it plays every DVD or blu ray on Earth. Every CD. Has a USB flash port, came loaded with all kinds of apps for Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc. . Plays EVERYTHING. I have built a massive Region B collection to go along with my already massive R A and Region Free collection. And many of the B's I've bought still aren't out in Region A. I've picked up a ton of Eureka/Masters of Cinema titles, BFI, Indicator, Arrow, etc., as well as many German releases and a few French releases and so on. Some examples include, "The Shohei Imamura Collection" box set, the BFI "The Devils" DVD, The BFI Pasolini and Derek Jarman box sets, "The Crying Game", several Masters of Cinema Pasolini titles, "Onibaba", UK Network releases of "The Nightcomers" and "Bad Timing", a French release of Abel Ferrara's "China Girl", some UK-only Arrow titles, the Reg.B locked Indicator releases of "Blue Collar", "The Border", and "Charley Varrick", the German release of "Smoke". Many, many other things, too, that have yet to see the light of day in Region A. |
