It's pretty stunning when you consider the time period it was made. It's a good watch but not something on my wish list.

Dreyer was a master. I watched "Vampyr" recently and that film is such a mindf**k. It's amazing to consider what he was doing in the 20s and 30s. A true renegade of cinema.

2 Questions for Bergman fans/enthusiasts?

What exactly is Fanny and Alexander about in terms of theme.

Also

Is it me or did Ingmar Bergman and Ingrid Bergman work on Autumn Sonata just because their names are similar? Did that get tossed around as a joke? Just curious

Is it really so strange that Sweden's greatest/most renowned actress and greatest/most renowned filmmaker wanted to work together?

Yeah. When I first watched it, I was absolutely speechless at the end of the film. Just amazing. I too bought the Criterion Blu right away, and I also bought the CD for Richard Einhorn’s Voices of Light. That music was so beautifully-haunting. This is definitely one of the best films I’ve ever seen.

I just got finished watching it for the first time, and wowowowowow it was so haunting and stunning and Faconetti's performance is just unreal.

Same here, I was shown it in a film history class, and became an instant Dreyer fan. Completely changed my view of what the silent-film era could offer, and got me interested in doing black&white photography. Immediately bought the CC DVD set, Day of Wrath is my favorite of his films now. That could change back to "Passion" after I pick up the new blu-ray.

Plenty of themes, in broad terms: Theatre and Family, death, religion, the supernatural, etc.

Love Dreyer's Films. Though I always felt Day of Wraith doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Deeply disturbing film with some great acting IMO.

Vampyr is in my Halloween rotation every year. Though I can't help to wonder what the original cuts were like.

Criterion really needs to get some more Dreyer films on Bluray. Luckily I have that great boxset from the UK.

Will Criterion drop DVDs? The forthcoming Bergman set is blu-ray only. In the past the reasoning was Criterion sold to libraries which often prefer DVDs.

The Blu-ray/DVD split was 60/40 for Criterion back in August 2013. I'd imagine the Blu-ray numbers have only increased since then. Criterion's niche is collectors and film buffs (with a blu-ray preference), many of which are found on sites like this, HTF, CF, etc.

I could see them dropping DVD and going with Blu-ray and streaming. It might still be early for them to release 4K discs.

How does the hard case trade-in work? I have a few digibook softcases for Breathless & Night of the Hunter-- does it cost to get hard cases with inserts, etc...?

Thanks!

The quickest turnaround is to paypal them the money and include what you need in the notes. The going rate is $5 or $10. I haven't done it in a while.

I had this exact same experience a few months back. The film is absolutely immaculate. I also love Vampyr which I had seen long before but now I really wish his other films would come to blu. After seeing Passion for the first time on blu, I can't help but feel compelled to wait to experience the rest of his films for the first time on the same format.

Oh yeah. I blind-bought the Eureka edition from the UK (nice book and booklet and all) on the basis of its notoriety. It genuinely wowed me on the first viewing. Wowed me again on the second. By the third (on the Criterion copy), I affirmed that this was a great work of art.

As I've been rethinking my top 100 favorite films, I've pushed The Passion of Joan of Arc to the #2 spot. Photography, performances, art design made it fantastic to watch, but what really made it stick for me were its themes concerning suffering, faith, and sin. It really speaks to me and is rather inspiring.

Yep, I bought a copy too after my last viewing. It's exquisite.

That's interesting. I hadn't noticed the Bergman set was BD only. But perhaps makes commercial sense given the mammoth undertaking. And as you rightly point out, the target "market" for the set is likely to have embraced BD.

I can't see them dropping DVD for standard releases any time soon. I know quite a few people want to see them start releasing 4K, but in reading some threads on the site for 4K releases of recent mainstream titles, I get the impression that the "collectors and film buffs" have even more unrealistic expectations of that format than BD. Not sure why Criterion would want to wade into those waters. Or that it even needs to.

Agreed. Silent films quickly became my favorite when I saw Nosferatu for the first time a couple years back on TCM. Earlier this year I rented Vampyr on Google Play, and it was excellent! Between Vampyr and Passion of Joan of Arc, I’m interested in exploring more of Dreyer’s work. He’s probably my second favorite silent film director behind F.W. Murnau.
