Thanks—I actually remember seeing this tweet way back... we did get Women, but I wish they’d get the ball rolling on more... especially his Movies from Talk to Her and before that only had DVD releases

Yeah, it’s my favorite too, but I’m reluctant to recommend it blindly - same reasons you gave. If I were offering just one Criterion suggestion, I’d say Videodrome. I wish that Criterion had gotten the BD for Dead Ringers.

Good point, hadn't thought about overlapping with the announcements.

Any chance there won't be a Barnes & Noble Criterion sale next month?
If there is no sale by Nov. 5-7, should I start crying?

Would be a pretty radical change if there isn't one. The past two or three have actually been a bit longer than usual, which would seem to indicate a commitment of sorts.

I certainly hope so. Remember though that BN was sold last June, just weeks before the summer Criterion sale. The purchase went down too close to change the plans for that sale and wasn't finalized until August anyway, but I'm sure the new owners have looked at all aspects of the company by now. I'm sure changes are coming to try to make BN more profitable, but what those changes are remain to be seen.

On balance you’re probably right. Naked Lunch is qualitatively different than other Cronenberg films. It’s a bit of an outlier. I just love the film so much I had to give it a recommendation.

I've been really slow to get into melodrama, too. Finally got there through silents, in particular Frank Borzage's very late 20s movies. As I sat there like a blubbering idiot, I realized there can more to it than pandering, and I was hooked. Yeah, Sirk.

And.....why aren't Borzage's silents on blu in the US? There are some region-free versions available from France.

There Fox titles. And who knows with the upcoming Disney situation? Also, only like one of those three French Blus[Lucky Star] are actually still in print.

Thanks for the input, everybody. I think I'll go with Videodrome to start; I had been leaning in that direction before posting. James Woods can do creepy really well, so I'm curious to see how he plays the lead role. I'll pick it up, either this week, or during the Barnes & Noble sale in November. I'm having a beast of a time trying to finalize my buy list. I'm watching The Innocents right now, and I'm thinking I'll pick that one up right away. Deborah Kerr never won a competitive Oscar. For the life of me, I don't know how that's possible.

Switching gears here, if great last scenes are being discussed, I have a few I'd throw out there.

I have to start with White Heat. I'm not going to give anything away, for the three people left in the world that haven't seen the film, or, at the very least, the iconic final scene. But James Cagney is magnificent. I love classic gangster movies, heist films, etc. White Heat might be my very favorite.

One that grabs the sentimental part of me, and gives it a good squeeze is Hoosiers. The little kid practicing in the gymnasium, and the voice over of Coach Dale at the very beginning when he's met his players, and the team is trying to find its identity. The struggles they all go through, and their ultimate triumph, all done in voice overs, as the kid keeps practicing. As the camera pans to the picture of their championship team, and the last words of the film are Coach Dale's telling his team, "I love you guys"--that gets me every time. Gene Hackman has made so many fantastic films. Movies that resonate with me deeply. He's either the lead actor, or in a really important supporting role. But Hoosiers just strikes every note perfectly. It's as much a story of redemption as it is teamwork and overcoming insurmountable odds to achieve greatness.

But my favorite final scene ever has to come from The Natural. Depending on how you look at it, it may be the penultimate and final scenes together-I see them as one continuous sequence. The Natural is such beautifully done allegory, and it's one time where I'm so glad that the film deviated from the novel. Bernard Malamud's book ends quite differently, but the film's denouement is infinitely more satisfying. Randy Newman's score, the cinematography, the shot of Wilford Brimley's Pop Fisher in the dugout...never has one moment in film so euphorically dished out karma to so many people. And that final moment, with Roy Hobbs playing catch with his son in the field of corn, Iris looking on-it's poetic. Sports lends itself so well to metaphor, and like Hoosiers, The Natural is so satisfying because a good, but ultimately flawed man finds true contentment when he puts the good of others before himself.

Yes! A total classic! Definitely one of my favorite ending scenes. The entire movie is fantastic.

It appears there is now first notice of the FLASH SALE officially starting tomorrow OCT 15 at Noon ET for 24 hrs.

I haven't gotten an email nor found anything on Crtierons various sites, but the thread just went up on the deals section by a poster who has gotten advance notice in the past.

I'm at the other end. I wish I didn't want as much as I do. I'm still pretty new to the collection though so I'm catching up.

The Kid is one of my favorite films. IMO, this is the best Chaplin film

Yea, it has been a huge hole in my collection, but I am righting the ship tomorrow. I'm not waiting nearly as long for The Circus. And, the plan is to grab all the Harold Lloyds during the B&N sale next month.

Wonderful choices. Muriel, or the Time of Return is on my list too. I watched it on the Criterion channel and I haven't stopped thinking about it. It's a movie I definitely need to re-watch.
