Watched Rebecca & absolutely loved it. Mrs Danvers made Nurse Ratchet look like everyone's friendly babysitter. & Flavell was annoying as fook!
The remake will be...interesting

You hadn't watched it before?

How is that possible?

But I agree. It's a fantastic movie. One of my favorites.

As nobody mentioned anything about Criterion-store sold items without their blue stickers (unless I missed those posts?) my only gripe was that.

While sometimes DD's parcels are not superb, they have IMO far surpasses amazon and still provide more protection that the crappy orange soft-paper+blubblewrap used by amazon.
In addition if it's more than 3 discs they will always use nice boxes for them.
Sad about your slipcover, sometimes they don't arrive in mint condition. Was it the Paramount Presents version?
Criterion themselves have said in the past that not all items come with Cellophane style wrap and with stickers. There has been a lot of debate about both in the past whether it indicates a re-wrapped item or not.

The wrap itself I'm nearly 100% isn't reliable since I have gotten brand new releases from BN and Criterion directly with both the cellophane crinkly folded ends style and the stretchy shrinkwrap style most frequently with the blue sticker. Certain titles most certainly all seem to have one type wrap or another, other same titles seem to have a mixture of wraps even with the stickers like they came out of different productions lines.

Criterion has certainly said the blue sticker doesn't come on 100% of the items, though I'm a bit more sceptical of that claim. I can't remember a new release item I've bought from BN or Criterion that didn't have it though I have had items with both type shrink wrap without stickers. There have been many posts in the past during Criterion Sales about people who would go to a BN store and remove the stickers they needed from stock items and often with employee permission so it doesn't necessarily mean the item is resealed or a return if the sticker is missing.

Mis-seated booklets also unfortunately are not an uncommon thing to see even in no doubt about it brand new Cellophane/Blue Sticker items

If I'm in store and have a chance, I will generally pick a blue stickered item over one without regardless of wrapper unless something else looks wrong. If there is a choice I will pick cellophane wrap over the stretchy style wrap if both have/don't have the sticker. If there is a single copy of a title I really want without the blue sticker with the stretchy wrap that looks to be in excellent condition that's OK too -- I have rarely not bought something ("I'll look at another store later") and I have never returned an item based specifically on wrap or sticker

The one item I always reject is a Criterion in a Blue Case. It's rare, but there have been several pictures over the years of this type item being seen in a store or received in a shipment. The one and only Criterion Bluray officially released with a blue case was Benjamin Button

I haven't watched it either. I would never consider it other than it being Hitchcock. I actually had the Criterion release in my wishlist at DeepDiscount and was working my way through orders and then the sale ended.
I only saw the clip used in the terrific documentary The Celluloid Closet.

Same way I have not seen loads of amazing films
It was always sold out when I was buying from amazon via black friday or this year's criterion sale. Finally got it when amazon were price matching during the B&N sale
Pissed that Notorious was OOS though

I realize that many people love Notorious and I own it on Blu-Ray myself, but IMO it pales in comparison to Rebecca. I feel the same way about Spellbound, which I also own. I know many people will disagree. And that's okay. It's art. There is no right or wrong answer.

To add why I hadn't seen it, I prefer to wait for the best version instead of double dipping. I could've bought BFI's Belle de Dour a long time ago but wanted the criterion. Watched it on the BFI player while waiting though. Same with Watership Down, even though it'll cost me way more to import them & buy them of course

There are exceptions like Paris Texas where I hear the UK release is better

TCM aired the restoration of La Strada last night. Looked gorgeous. Glad that was my first time seeing it.

I watched the Pre Code film Merrily, We Go To Hell streaming on Criterion’s streaming site and I thought it looked excellent. Hopefully this will be their next Dorothy Arzner release on Blu-Ray.

Question for you fine folks:

Will a pre-paid Visa gift card work on the Criterion site without issue? I just got one as a gift and was the living embodiment of that Antonio Banderas gif as I thought about the flash sale coming up. Thx in advance.

Check if it's a firmware issue, otherwise Criterion will definitely help you out.

Player is fine.

The fact that I've just opened the disc after buying it in the last criterion sale(due to shipping it to a friend then covid) & living in the UK won't really help with criterion helping me out

Don't assume that. Criterion are very accommodating with helping out their customers in situations like this. I had a situation where I sent a bronzed copy of Walkabout earlier this year which got lost in the mail somewhere when the pandemic struck. When I got in touch with them, they were very helpful in sending me a brand new copy and even gave me a list of other known discs that had issues with bronzing and asked if I had any of those too. I didn't, but if I did I really think they would have just sent me replacement copies of those too without asking for the old discs back. The fact that you purchased the item directly from them is a plus.

I'll look into it, have to check out my seventh seal & M for the bronzing problem too
But when I contacted them a month or two ago about replacement cases, they said there was nothing they could do right now because that is on hold as ths NY team is working remotely & they do not have a timeline when it will be back to normal. I would say things have esculated if anything from back then
I imagine the same applies to replacement discs
