Anyone know why Criterion has held off from releasing Bad Timing on Blu-ray? It's the only Nicolas Roeg title in their catalogue that hasn't had a Blu-ray release. They must still have rights to it, as the DVD has never gone out of print. I've owned that disc for years, and while it's great, I'd love to see a hi-def scan.

The Criterion Channel is hosting 3 films of Indian director Raj Kapoor - Awara (Vagabond), Shree 420 (Mr. Conman) and Sangam (Union). I like Awara a good deal, but Shree 420 is cloyingly twee and Sangam is a sprawling self-aggrandizing bore by a pudgy middle-aged Kapoor believing he's an eligible romantic lead. Hope these are not the films being considered for the Bollywood / Indian movies boxset that was hinted at.

Probably waiting on a decent HD master for that one. The 2015 UK blu from Network got lukewarm reviews for having a dated master with serious issues.

What's the chances Criterion at some point releases Mr. Arkadin on Blu-ray? I watched this movie for the first ever last night on HBO Max and it was incredible. Surprised at myself for not ever making a point to watch it before. It has to be the craziest movie ever made. Words really can't describe it. It's something that needs to be experienced. And it's definitely the type of movie that warrants repeated viewings. If this ever gets released on Blu, it would be a Day One purchase for me.

I’ve been holding onto my Criterion DVD set hoping they upgrade all cuts. I really hope it’s paired with The Trial and The Other Side of the Wind!

One month they'll have a Welles spectacle where they upgrade Mr. Arkadin, release The Trial, The Other Side of the Wind (with They'll Miss Me When I'm Dead as an extra), and Citizen Kane.

The fifth release will be some random movie nobody's ever heard of.

It's going to be interesting to see if we get a Criterion hint for New Years. I'm going to say probably not at this point, but it would be nice.

Sorry if this has been asked/answered before, but does anyone think Criterion will ever produce 4K UHD discs?

Expiring from the Criterion Channel - Theatre of Blood (1973)

Yes, this is a slasher flick, but it's a damn good one. The amazing Vincent Price plays a bitter theater actor who seeks revenge against the critics who gave him bad reviews by staging their deaths based on iconic scenes from Shakespeare. If that doesn't grab your attention and pique your interest, there's nothing else in the world I could possibly say that would sway your opinion.

DaBargainHunta's Decree: The rare example of a movie that actually lives up to its devilishly delightful concept. (Subtitles/Captions: Yes!)

I was blown away by this one. I wasn’t expecting such a serious performance from Price.

Theatre of Blood is fantastic. Every skill Vincent Price developed as a performer across his storied career is on full display. It’s a pitch perfect film, one of my favorite black comedies, along with Arsenic and Old Lace and The Producers.

It's too bad there's no release of Theatre of Blood in the US now. I wonder if Kino, or maybe Arrow could release it here?

In this classic screwball comedy that's credited with introducing the world to "the Cary Grant persona," Irene Dunne and the aforementioned Cary Grant star as a divorced couple who have to wait 90 days for it to become official. Over those those three months, they do everything possible to interfere with each other's romantic relationships. A young Ralph Bellamy plays Dunne's potential next husband. His shaky Oklahoma accent doesn't pass muster, but that hardly matters in a farce like this. The famous Marilyn Monroe upskirt spot may have come from this movie - with Joyce Compton doing it to a much different result and reaction decades earlier.

DaBargainHunta's Decree: Light, fun, and a star-making role for Cary Grant - what's not to like? (Subtitles/Captions: Yes!)
Watched this last night, didn't expect it to be so much fun. I found Irene Dunne to be the highlight for me, very cute and appealing, particularly when she laughs. Funny thing about the "upskirt" scene... I had no idea it existed in this film, but the night before I watched the The Woman in Red which also famously features such a scene. Funny how little coincidences happen like that sometimes.

I'm waiting for this one too. It's literally the only Criterion DVD I have left that hasn't been upgraded yet. When it comes out I can say goodbye to DVDs! Well, except for Fishing With John, but that one can have a pass...

Expiring from The Criterion Channel - Tchoupitoulas (2012)

In this documentary, three brothers spend one night wandering around New Orleans - seeing the sights, the sounds, and the people that make up this iconic American city. There is no "story" or "plot" to speak of. The entire film consists of the youngest brother wisecracking, making observations, and arguing with his older brothers - as they take in the lush New Orleans city scenery, observe people at work or about town, listen to live music along the way, and explore their surroundings. That's it! It's all very relaxing and "chill."

DaBargainHunta's Decree: A leisurely night in Louisiana. (Subtitles/Captions: Yes! But some of the words run together likethis, which make the captions feel like they came from a cheap bootleg. Bad quality control by Criterion, but they're tolerable.)

Is the room tone video they just posted on their site this year’s verson of their New Year’s drawings? Are there any clues here or are the clips culled from interviews that have already been released?

Watched it, and didn't notice anything that wasn't already used. Could be wrong though.

What movie features a Tony Hawk interview?

If Criterion has any balls, they’ll release Gleaming the Cube as their first UHD.
