I think you're both right, just depends what state you live in. I'm in PA, so I don't think I pay online sales tax...yet.

Haha what a rip. I'll probably just wait until DeepDiscount's 50% off sale then. They don't tack on phantom fees and require you to pay for a membership which negates part of your savings anyway. Whether or not it's refundable isn't even an issue... if they charge sales tax, they are adding back whatever you "saved" by being a member.

Little off topic, but did you know that the PS3 is Criterion's reference Blu-ray player?
I read that when they announced the winner of the cooking contest (Did you guys watch "Meatloaf", I may never look at it the same way again)
Anyone here on the Playstation Network? My ID is zedd117.

Beta? CC? you guys picking anything up?

I feel kinda guilty about buying more, considering I spent around $300 on the last sale. But my wants may out weigh my needs.
I currently have all the Criterion Blu-rays also & prefer Amazon

I"m on the PSN but I don't play any games... Is that from Sifl & Olly? I haven't thought of them in years.

My local B&N is holding some movies for me, including The Third Man, for the sale. YAY!

Was disappointed in The third man and 7th seal. Sure, well done Film, but I really wasn't engaged by them. Considering selling both. Little replay value AFAIC. The 'Chess with Death' scene is horribly over-rated.

On a different note. I own 'Fishing with John' purely for comedic value (who doesn't love Dennis Hopper ranting?) but how in the world did this EVER get a Criterion release? John Laurie knows a lot of Hollywood types... he must have pulled a string or two. Anybody know the details?

Cheers,

Doc

Well, how people feel about these classics is largely a matter of taste, but I would nonetheless disagree that the "Chess with Death" scene is overrated. It's hard to imagine the impact these scenes had back in 1957, when people really hadn't seen anything like it.

And they were so effective in etching themselves in the popular imagination that they are even referenced in (of all things!) the Bill & Ted movies, even though they were largely aimed at teenagers who might not know Ingmar Bergman from Ingrid Bergman.

The Seventh Seal may have lost much of its punch over the last few decades, but back in the late 50s, it was pretty revolutionary cinema.

Agree. Cinema in particular needs to be taken in context of when it was made. Unfortunately, it doesn't age well, like music, or painting. Fashions come and go, styles come and go... what was once revolutionary (Like Citizen Kane, Seventh Seal, Bonnie & Clyde, even Jurassic Park) can quickly seem passé, once it becomes the norm.

I see people on these boards all the time saying how terrible Citizen Kane is. That's fine, its their opinions, but quite simply when that film came out, no one had ever seen photography look that way. Same with Barry Lyndon; until that film, no one had ever seen images lit by candlelight. And they had a huge impact at the time.

Seventh Seal startled a lot of people in the way it questioned God, and humanized Death. People simply didn't know what to make of it. Now, sure, to someone raised on MTV and the internet, it wont have the same impact it did 50 years ago. But I don't think it diminishes the quality of the film at all, as long as you take the art for what it is and not more.

I can see how the disillusionment with religion theme that was in the 7th seal would have been a bit shocking for the day. Still, I see little replay value unfortunately. I really wanted to be impressed. It ended up being more like 'checking it off my list' kind of thing.

Hi everyone,

Received a few suggestions on the THE CRITERION COLLECTION spreadsheet and included the Eclipse Series, bolded the box sets and color coated the Maltin's "4" rated section but also included Criterion Explore top 10 selections in orange.

The Criterion Collection Releases Spreadsheet 1.1 (Excel File) | (PDF File)

Kept the fields tight enough, so for those who need to utilize the documents for their cell phones especially during this upcoming B&N sale or just for regular use, I hope it helps.

Yeah, the PS3 has been Criterion's choice for a blu-ray player since their venture into high-definition releases. There was a great article in Sound & Vision magazine back in September 2008 about their theater makeover with the help from Joe Kane. Here's the link... it's a good 5-page read, and it also lists all the components they're using.

Also, it's a bit sad because on the second page of the article, there is mention of Criterion's forthcoming blu-ray release of "Contempt," which we all now know was never able to be released due to licensing.

The Barnes and Noble near my office is quite the same. A few of the Criterion blu titles they have do have multiple copies, like Kagemusha, Repulsion, and Pierrot Le Fou. Also noticed that they had a few copies of Monsoon Wedding and Howard's End. But all other titles they have there's pretty much one copy out and that's it. I remember when I bought Last Year At Marienbad there about a month ago. It was a good two or so weeks before I saw another copy of it out on the shelf.

At this point the main titles I'm planning on getting are The Seventh Seal (if the one copy of it I saw in there is still around...my girlfriend insisted on pulling a George Costanza and hiding it behind some DVDs that probably don't sell too well. I thought she was crazy, but I'll be checking to see if it is still there as my first purchase Tuesday), The Wages Of Fear, Kagemusha, Wings Of Desire (have to hit a different BnN for this), and Pierrot Le Fou. May add a few others after, but those are my main targets.

Just as a general note, the name of the movie is Howards End. It doesn't have an apostrophe.
