I received my 4 replacement cases today after 2 1/2 months. I had to email them about a timetable and they shipped them out. I found it interesting that I think they may have taken the cases from stock because there was still some sticker on top of the cases and they all had the security sticker in the case. When I got The Third Man case earlier this year, there wasn't a security sticker inside.

Sorry to hear about the delay on those cases. It seems Criterion ships to some areas faster than others.

I'm in Ohio and received them 3 days after placing an order (via paypal).

Hey everyone, one of the films I finished watching today is the upcoming release of "Nine".

I'm not going to go into the particulars of the quality of the film but I noticed a few misunderstanding on various film sites and I figured with people here who have purchased Fellini's "8 1/2", some may be wondering if one should purchase "Nine".

The misunderstanding by many people on the various forums is that the film is a sequel or remake to "8 1/2", it's not. The American composer Maury Yeston was a huge fan of "8 1/2" to the point that he was obsessed with it. So, he wanted

In a 1982 interview with Yeston in regards to how "Nine" relates to Fellini's "8 1/2", Yeston said, "When Fellini made 8 1/2 he already had done seven films and a documentary, so he called his next movie 8 1/2. I thought, if you add music, it's like half a number more."

Fortunately, with the help of Katharine Hepburn who saw the original production, Fellini granted Yeston the rights to write a fictional musical inspired by his film.

With the movie adaptation in 2009, Yeston gave director Rob Marshall ("Chicago", "Memoirs of a Geisha") the go ahead to do a film based on the musical but to do it his way.

First off, Daniel Day-Lewis's performance is awesome but I would like to hear from you all (once you seen the film) but doesn't Lewis's Guido look like...Jean-Luc Godard? Sunglasses, suit, overall look.

Anyway, people misunderstood the film as being a sequel to "8 1/2" and that is where many people got upset. It's not a sequel. In fact, Marshall addresses it during the commentary once again because people keep posting on the forums that "Nine" is a remake or a sequel to "8 1/2" when it's not.

But you will see many elements similar to "8 1/2" in the film. In fact, the studio of where the movie was shot was done in an area where Fellini shot some of his films.

But anyway... just wanted to get this one out as "Nine" is coming out on Blu-ray I believe next week and for those who enjoyed "8 1/2" via Criterion Collection on Blu-ray were wondering whether or not to pick "Nine" up or not.

I enjoyed the film but it has its share of shortcomings and not as good as "Chicago". But there are some scenes...I'm sure you blokes will enjoy!

The Borders 40% off coupon is for any single item in stores. I picked up the blu-ray copy of "The Man Who Fell to Earth" today for $25.67 (including tax). Even though I have the SD criterion set of it, I thought I would get the blu to save some space on my rack. Also, it's a Studio Canal release, so I'm guessing it will be going out of print soon.

It's just too bad that I already ordered and received my replacement cases for all of the other criterion blu releases I previously had in collection, and will now have to pay the full price for one lone replacement case.

Just finished watching Ride With the Devil for the first time. This film far exceeded my expectations. Going by internet reviews, etc. I was expecting this movie to be a weak link in the Criterion library. But it's actually a very good film that I imagine I'll watch many more times. The costume design cinematography was especially great.

It's also interesting because most of my ancestors lived in southern Missouri during that era and faced similar choices as the characters in this film. That choice being join the Confederates, fight with the Union or try to keep their head down and stay neutral.

I also thought Jewel gave a solid acting performance. Didn't even know she was in films before seeing this.

That's because people were reviewing the studio cut. The new Criterion edition is Ang Lee's personal cut, what he intended the film to be.

I looked closer at my 4 replacement cases. One of them is cracked! 2 1/2 months and a cracked case...I'm somewhat disappointed since I paid for that.

Just watched Chungking Express, and I really enjoyed it. I really liked the camera work.
And I don't know if it's because I recently started dating an Asian girl, but Faye Wong and Valerie Chow were super attractive.
I kinda was confused though, because I knew nothing about the film before watching it, and wasn't aware it was two separate stories. I was waiting at the end for the second story to somehow tie into the first.

General question, when exactly do you guys watch with the commentary? I don't think I could sit through the same 90-120 minutes of movie two times in a row, but I don't want to wait so long that it's not fresh in my head.

I can't speak for others, myself I enjoy watching the movies with commentary with the director if it's there or with a film historian giving background and interesting information about scenes or how they were film or intend wanted by the directors. I know it can be a bit strange to re-watch a movie a second time but I do find it very interesting at times

It depends. Sometimes I watch it right after the film (in the case of "Chungking Express" I did that) or when I'm working in the office, I'll have it playing.

A long time ago, I used to record them on cassette and would listen to them in my car.

But the good thing about Criterion commentaries is that they do provide an index, so you can look and see what kind of commentary they are giving at a certain point in the film.

I cannot even begin to imagine what this hobby that we are all so passionate about would have looked like without Criterion. Really, there has never been a better time to collect films, folks!
You're making Monsieur Criterion blush

I can't remember if this has already been brought up, but I just put in Revanche, and no matter what I do, I cannot get the subtitles to work.

I used the pop up menu and set them to "on".
I stopped the movie, ejected the disc, then switched them to "on" before playing the film.

No matter what I do, set to "on" or "off", they don't show up.

I had the same problem, I can't quite remember how I rectified it.

I have an OPPO BDP-83 and I remember for one Blu Ray, can't remember if it was Revanche, but I had to go into the OPPO menu and reposition the subtitles. You can move the viewing up and down.

I am just about to head out when I get back I will recheck my Revanche disc and see what I did to fix this problem.

Cheers,

Alan

Figured it out.
Had to go through "display" from my blu ray remote, then turn on the subtitles from there. I wonder why they don't work via Criterion's menus.

I remember having issues, but it worked. I will say that it is the single most realistic crime drama ever released in any shape or form (apart from the unique aspects of the story). I work in this area of the law and can tell you that it is spot on. I could not tell that the people in this movie were actors. Amazing.

FYI, Image is releasing four titles on Blu on 8/24 that are in the CC. In other words, that's four less that will be on Criterion's BD upgrade schedule:

The Long Good Friday
Mona Lisa
Time Bandits
Withnail and I
