I can tell you there is a very pro-colonial argument in the film.

[Show spoiler]While the French army leaves the unnamed country, you never know really why the people wanted the french army to go. The woman who works on the plantation (as well as the old owner) are proud and ignorant, unlike the workers. What I do see is the rebels and even the local government millitias terrorizing civilians, and killing people. This is civil war, but I feel they wanted to show why it's a problem. I never believed in the film that the quote "White Material" are the villains. It may need to understand context of the african nations that were terrorized by the colonials, but they completely ignore that here. I began to feel more sympathy to the ignorant (whites) than for the "savages" (blacks)

I felt pretty angry at how it all came together after the film ended (which is the intention), at how we can let as backward people damage the civilization that some are trying to embrace. Even if the colonials left, then how does it become better? I think that is what they are trying to talk about.
I think the film was a representation of the filmmakers life experiences during the time she spent there as an adolescent. I believe the film was fairly well balanced in its views on colonialism and violence. As far as who you felt sympathy for, I think think that in this film there is enough to go around for everyone. (just for different reasons)

And yeah, I'll most likely spend much more than $250 in the Criterion sales alone.
You can sign up for a free thirty day trial membership too. You have to spend ten bucks on a qualifying item but last November (and I assume you can still do this) I bought a ten dollar e-card and printed out the mail and used it in a store that day. If you don't cancel after the 30 days you get billed the $25 membership fee. They even send you little reminder mails (and yet I still forgot to cancel - go figure).

Oh, and the 10% member discount only applies instore.

After seeing Almodovar's "Hable con Ella" for the first time today I wondered why Criterion hasn't released something from him yet. One of my favorite directors, I always find his films moving and emotionally striking.

I also hope for "City Lights." It's a personal favorite. When they eventually get around the "The Gold Rush" I really hope they do justice to the original film. I could care less about the '40s Special Edition with dialogue and extra Jabba the Hutt scenes.

Put a tick mark on City Lights for me also....I have such a soft spot for that film. It was the first Charlie feature length I saw...it's just magic to me, and that last scene puts such a lump in my throat every time

I will take any Charlie film they release next on blu! But City Lights and The Kid are musts!!

Yeah, Alain Resnais' Mon Oncle d'Amerique, Marcel Carné's Hotel Du Nord and a silent Carl Dreyer, Master of the House. No big deal.

No idea but I'm hoping there aren't any Public Domain titles, studios which only release low quality public domain stuff, onto Blu-ray. CHARADE is part of it but I'm glad Criterion released it.
Charade is public domain but not the music. Glad nobody released it without music.
W.C. Fields was a major star, but maybe more in the late 30s, I don't know how famous he was, during the silent era. But I think he's sometimes more neglected than others, because of his unhealthy lifestyle, and his of course not always political correct humor.

Watched the Carlotta Blu-ray, of World on a Wire. That's one strange Fassbinder Movie, even if you speak german, or maybe because I understand german?

After checking Criterion's posts today at their site I have come across a somehow surprising fact. I really see a lack of Spanish cinema in the Collection from the current BD selection. Not trying to sounds as if it was a terrible thing; I just think it would be great to see some of it in the future. Personally, I wish something Almodovar could get released and from those titles already in the Collection I would say "The Spirit of the Beehive" would be a wonderful addition to their BDs .

Au Revoir Les Enfants was so depressing, yet so enjoyable. It was a blind buy for me, and I'm glad I got it. I know some people felt pity for Joseph, but I couldn't after he did what he did. What happened to him is not the same as what happened to Bonnet and the other boys. I'm trying not to give spoliers, so if I sound vauge and confusing I apologise, I also haven't had my coffee yet, and it's 6:30 in the morning.

In July I'll probably order Senso for myself, when I order Lonesome Dove, a present for my parents to celebrate the fact they will have a Blu-Ray player. I really enjoyed The Leopard, so I'm hoping Senso will be just as good. I already have Naked pending pre-order, and Diabolique is being held up with it.

After all those positive opinions, maybe I should watch it again. It's always difficult to be positive, if you had to watch in school as a youngster.

Ah yes, the terrible "read/watched it in school syndrome." It's one of the reasons why I hate Romeo & Juliet so much, the play and the Baz Lurhmann film. I studied it in grade 9, 11, and first year undergrad. Everytime they showed the Lurhmann film out of sheer laziness. Blergh. However, I'd still hate the film and play without the constant bombardiment of it in school; Shakespeare has way better stuff.

A lot of the other stuff we read/watched in class wasn't so bad. My grade 12 English teacher showed us the Playboy version of MacBeth that Polanski directed, and he showed us the Robert Redford/Mia Farrow version of The Great Gatsby. Re-visiting stuff you have to study in school is always a good thing, as you are choosing to read/watch it yourself, and you don't have to "think" what someone else expects you to think of it.

Couldn't be more with you with everything you said. I love Polanski's MacBeth, I watched the sh*t out of that DVD, even had to replace it.
Baz Luhrmann is not for my taste, every time he comes up with something good, he follows it up with something terrible.
I brought Blow-up to School to watch, as we could pick a Movie at age 16, I think everybody hates it now for a lifetime.

I had to watch Blow-Up in university for my 20th Century British literature/culture class. I want a Criterion blu-Ray release of it now.
