My mom just dropped off my copy of The Seventh Seal at my office, along with Muppets Take Manhattan, How to Train Your Dragon, Some Like it Hot, and lovely fern green wool hoodie she knitted for me. I now have the chance to see a decent PQ version of The Seventh Seal, and have a few other goodies to watch while I wait for Hausu, The Man with No Name Trilogy, and If... to show up.

Me too, I finally found the BD at a resonable price, 12.50 on Amazon. It's like 30 bucks in stores here. Do you think it would pair well with The Seventh Seal, as I'm trying to decide what BD I should watch tonight after The Seventh Seal? Or would Muppets Take Manhattan be a better choice? You could easily argue that all three have a similar plot of the protagonist trying to find himself to prove what kind of a person he is. However, HTTYD is definitely closer in time period and geographical location to The Seventh Seal. Also, the concept of death is much more prevailent in HTTYD than The Muppets Take Manhattan. Some Like it Hot is too light-hearted to be watched with The Seventh Seal, I'll watch it tomorrow.

Just trying to lighten things up here folks, sorry if I offend anyone.

I don't think I've ever seen that Muppets movie. Would probably make for a great fake Criterion cover
Good point about HTTYD - it's a classic Hero myth following Joseph Campbell's explication of the heroic mono-myth. HTTYD also pairs really well with Avatar - it's a shorter version
Meanwhile, my own Seventh Seal is also sitting beside the TV awaiting its turn...

Love and Death pairs very well with Seventh Seal. Now if only it were available in an acceptable transfer... :/

I have been wanting to see it, actually, because it references The Seventh Seal.

Edit: My apologies to Kurosawa haters for posting this, but I think The Bad Sleep Well is in serious need of an upgrade. I watched it last night, and thought it was pretty awesome for a modern film noir twist on Hamlet.

The sale's on for 2 weeks. Between B&N and Amazon, Criterions range from 19-80 bucks, depending on sales, box sets, and what not. The most common price I've seen outside of a sale is about 28-32 bucks before shipping and taxes for a single disc title. Amazon has a few that are around the 20-22 dollar mark permanently though.

If you don't get all of them, there's another sale in November, where Criterions are 50% off. This sale is only 40%. Also, the tax B&N charges us is only the 5% GST, which makes me happy, as I don't have to pay 15% HST like I normally do. Their shipping is about 1-2 bucks less than Amazon, but the 5% tax they charge usually makes up that difference. Like I said though, their shipping to Canada is slow, slow, slow.

Amazon, on the other hand, doesn't charge sales tax, but they do charge an import fee on orders/items over 25 bucks. You usually, although not always, get that import tax back two months later.

The only Criterion that I can see that is a major price difference in Canada from the US is Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. However, Amazon Canada is sold out of the title for some reason, and you can only get jacked up prices from Market Sellers now.
Just wanted to say thanks for all the info - glad to get some regarding Canadian importing from these two sites. Much appreciated!

Not a problem! I've in turn, learned from other users on here. I've only been importing since April. You really do need to price check though, between all the sites, as well as in-store sales. On the rare occasion, the Canadian price is cheaper than the US price.

FYI, for some stuff, even importing from Amazon UK is cheaper than the US. Not Criterions, obviously, but other titles. I was able to get Disney's sleeping Beauty brand-new for about 23 bucks Canadian, once the exchange was applied from Amazon UK, whereas you're lucky to find it under 30 USED here.

On day one for B&tB I got it for $16
And I can find it used for $21 on a pretty regular basis. Apart from Criterions, I'm actually halfway decent at finding good prices - Criterion just kills me.

Sleeping Beauty is a different kettle of fish though, as it's OOP. B&TB is still in print. For the record, I paid about a dollar more on release day than your did, but I got a bookmark holder (actually a kiddie purse) for free with it, without even expecting it.

See, 50 some dollars or higher, and it's not even the steelbook.

Another movie that goes well with The Seventh Seal is Roger Corman's The Masque of the Red Death with Vincent Price, Jane Asher (Deep End) and Hazel Court. It was photographed by Nicolas Roeg. I would love to see this on Blu-ray, but the MGM "Midnite Movies" DVD is pretty solid.

Just received my very first Criterion Collection title.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. YaY Can't wait to watch it with all the talk about Criterion being the better transfers out there, looking forward to it.

OH misread that. Haha Sleeping Beauty was hard - I ended up picking a new copy for a couple months ago for $25 locally. You're right though - a totally different kettle of fish. haha

I picked up Sleeping Beauty at Borders earlier this year using one of their 40% off coupons. Months later, I discovered that the Blu-ray case contained DVDs. I still don't know how that happened. Luckily, I found a mint copy at a local used book store.

I love that movie, it's one of my favourite Price films. My mom made me watch it as a kid, long before I knew Jane Asher was Paul McCartney's ex. The Poe short story is pretty awesome too.

Not so lucky to find it locally cheap here. I had never seen the BD of it, and had bought the DVD copy for 25 at Wally World last year just after it went OOP (no BD player at the time). Only diff between my import and the NA copy is the lack of BD-Live, and it's region B. I have a cheapass Seiki from Walmart that was hackable to play Region B/PAL titles. Best 78 bucks spent, and it's comparable to my Panasonic.

That sounds like $78 well spent.

I got very lucky with Sleeping Beauty - ended up getting the first printing with the special edition slipcase for that price (the slip opens up like the old Beauty and the Beast DVD).

I'm hoping to get as lucky with The Third Man at a good price, but I'm not sure that'll happen.

Nice. I bought my first seven Criterions during the last Barnes & Noble sale and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was one of them. I have yet to watch it though.
