I applaud the Mulholland Drive selection. GIRLFRIENDS is an interesting selection. I haven't seen it myself but seems worthy of a viewing. The article says Kubrick enjoyed it.
Wow, the comments on the article are just a stunning example of maturity and intelligence.

You're just trying to stir the pot again aren't you because I keep mentioning the Monkees.

Dunham does have some interesting points though.

World on a Wire is currently $25.49 down from $34.99 on Amazon. Decent price drop!

I was joking. I've been talking about The Monkees a lot, and you mention everyone's "favourite," Lena Dunham, and I did an obviously failed attempt at cracking a joke about how you're trying to stop the Monkees talk by starting up the Lena Dunham war again.

However, there are probably plenty of people in this thread who think that as bad as Tiny Furniture was, without seeing it themselves, Lena Dunham has more credibility than the Monkees ever will, because she actually wrote and directed her own film, whereas "they never played their own instruments, or wrote their own music."*

[Show spoiler]*Yes they did, they also co-wrote Head, but Bob Rafelson being his usual assholish self, wouldn't give them credit. Heck, Mike, Micky, and Peter also directed stuff at various points in time too.

You're so right.
Some of my favourite purchases have been the Eclipse sets.
So far, I have a bunch of Japanese ones, but it might be time to branch out and get something very different for me, like the Czech new wave films or the Larisa Shepitko set.
Keep up the reviews.
I'd love what some other members here think of their Eclipse sets...

I paid about 4 cents more for it on Barnes and Noble (excluding shipping and the whole conversion rates) back at the end of February with one of the 25% off coupons. It's well worth owning, regardless of how much you pay for it though.

Seriously, if you guys haven't pulled the trigger on World on a Wire Yet, do so. Quit waiting for the bloody B&N sale.

Default Another mystery?

Excuse me, but did a whole of posts just disappear from this thread again?
I think we were up to page 2412 and then I posted something and noticed we had dropped back to 2411.
Did anyone ever discover what happened to Joe Dalek?

I have only starter seeing this in recent time and don't really recall much of this type of talk in the past.
Hi all. I've been lurking on these boards a while and thought, since this sums up my story (interest in Criterions during Blu-Era), I would introduce myself. I've picked up about 50 Criterions on Blu-ray in the last 6 months or so. I believe I was made aware of the criterion label from Wes Anderson films and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" while in college. I'm no film expert but do like to think that what I am watching is of some importance and/or historical impact. I also like to think I am humble enough to like bad movies (I love "Death to Smoochy"). I guess that is why I've started collecting these films.

I wasn't interested in the other films from the collection, especially given the price tag, until I watched "Seven Samurai" on netflix about a year ago. Now, I can't stop! "Harakiri" is the most treasured in my collection. I absolutely loved that movie. Besides the samurai films (looking forward to trilogy), I've really enjoyed "Branded to Kill", "Night of the Hunter", "12 Angry Men", and "The Lady Vanishes". I would say the movie I've been the most disappointed in was "Mystery Train". I really liked the setting of the film and many of the characters as well. But I just didn't like the execution of the parallel plots. Maybe it was innovative at the time, but I've just seen it done so much better.

As far a fidelity goes... These films (Blu-rays and Criterions in particular) coupled with a nice plasma screen have provided an awakening to me in regards to black and white films. So much so, that I now find myself wishing more current films were shot in B&W.

Thanks for taking the time to read my long introduction. I look forward to talking about the CC with you guys in the future. You might also see me in the Studio Ghibli thread from time to time as well (can we got those in the CC?). Seeya around.

Is there any chance of getting some blaxploitation on blu ray soon? Does criterion have the rights to any?

Glad you are enjoying the collection, there is so much to discover with these movies. I do enjoy the regular Hollywood sort of "escape movies" but I always was a fan of movies that need more out of me then just sitting down and shutting down my brain That is why I really like Criterion, Kino, MoC, BFI....they offer us movies that make us think and challenge us. Keep exploring and have fun.

A couple of days ago there was a post by "new member" Joe Dalek that is now gone. I noticed it because it appeared above the post I had just written about my disappointment with White Material after watching it for the first time (my post was #48122). It said something like "you tell it, SpiderBaby". It was only up for less than a day.

Pretty weird.

Henry Jaglom began to issue it.

The Monkees knew exactly what they were doing when they decided to call the film and the soundtrack Head. I was having a discussion with one of my friends, about music and I just said without thinking, "I gave you Head...THE MUSIC ALBUM, THE MUSIC ALBUM!" He just cracked up laughing.

Alambrista! review up on DVD Beaver. Interesting stuff given the comparison to El Norte (as I'm watching it tonight).
