Great film, but isn't it a Warner title?

I guess the reasoning is if Sony wouldn't handle On the Waterfront then they wouldn't release In a Lonely Place.

Is this what was all said about these films?

  • Darling (Schlesinger)? no
  • Now licensing from WB? Yes, Badlands in Early 2013 - no comment on other WB titles
  • Le Samourai? possibly, at some point in the not too distant future
  • In A Lonely Place? no
  • World Cinema Foundation/Film Foundation - trying to work out WCF titles similar to foreign box set release
  • Film Foundation restorations will always come out on BD if Criterion has them (Richard III, Colonel Blimp coming to Blu-ray)
  • Andrei Rublev? restoration progressing in Russia - "desparately want to rerelease"
  • Cimino made some small changes to Heaven's Gate (some dialogue, removed intermission)
  • Some Eclipse may upgrade to Blu-ray! Les Miserables (Bernard) has restoration and may become a mainline title
  • Apu Trilogy? in progress, another Ray title in 2013 (Apu Trilogy or other title)
  • Some fun documentaries coming up
  • releasing Shoah + 3 shorts
  • releasing The Devil's Backbone (Del Toro) - mid-2013
  • releasing On The Waterfront in 3 aspect ratios
Nice tidbits. Les Miserables on Blu ray would be fantastic. Le Samourai is a no brainer for me, I've been waiting for it.

I'd love to have that film on Blu ray. Let's hope it happens.

These will be part of the WB Gangster Collection #2. I love Baby Face too, but I'm not sure it's considered a 'major' film. Wild Boys of the Road is another title I'd throw out there.

That's what I get for half paying attention while grimacing through the debate.

I'll go sit in the corner until its over, then watch my DVD of Chain Gang.

Would be a fascinating release. Stanwyck is great and a young John Wayne makes an appearance.

I think there's only two Stanwyck film (MOC's Double Indemnity and a shoddy release of Martha Ivers from Film Chest) on blu-ray at the moment and that needs to change.

Maybe Paramount would license something like Sorry, Wrong Number to Criterion. I don't see Paramount releasing that any time soon. Plus, they need to get on the ball with releasing Roman Holiday.

They named a few films that WCF have restored, including -- yes -- Limite, but not in the context of "we're definitely going to release these." But one could read between the lines and assume they will release them eventually.

Then they continued talking about FF and confirmed that they will eventually upgrade to Blu-ray any titles they currently license on DVD that FF are restoring. Specifically they said that Richard III and Colonel Blimp are coming, which isn't much of a surprise.
Thanks

There's always the chance of an upgrade on The Furies.

And in November, whoever wins the election will no doubt take credit for making this momentous relationship possible.

Man, just thinking about Chain Gang's final shot, the one that sort of pre-figures Harry Lime's intro... gives me chills.

This weekend I may do a double feature of Chain and Sullivan's Travels.

Another possible upgrade from the Eclipse would be The Jungle Book. I think I heard that there is an HD version out there...

Scarface is a Universal title.

My guess for the Warner pre-code title is Show Boat (James Whale). It's a big title and highly regarded film but for whatever reason Warner Brothers have never released it on dvd. (They find it too racially insensitive?) Criterion had released Show Boat on laserdisc with numerous supplements. It would make sense for them to want the rights back if they already have extras produced for the film and Warner obviously has no plans to release it themselves.

Haha. I was there and I just got back from watching Sunday Bloody Sunday. Thank you for the summary. Sadly there were only about 15 people there. I asked the question about Malick. At first I couldn't think of a single question except stupid stuff and then later on I could have asked 100 questions. Oh well. Next time.

1936 isn't pre-code. Plus, do Criterion really do musicals, Pina and Eclipse titles aside?
