Ahh. I thought it was a wishlist-type place...but seeing things like the 'Paranormal Activity' films on it confused me (although I did see a Vampyros Lesbos one there and would really like that on blu-ray, myself)

That whole little Vampire section would be nice on Blu.

Some of those there would be cool to have Criterion do but not likely, some were actual possible candidates for future Criterion releases, and some are just down right hilarious...4 episodes of Cheers for example, that one had me laughing.

Luckily, a few of them are!..although Blood and Roses doesn't and could also use one..it's a fantastic film that needs way more recognition...and it's never even had a DVD release.

Yeah you are right a few of them do already have blu-ray releases or ones coming soon like The Vampire Lovers coming in the Spring.

With Blood and Roses I have been wanting to see the film for the longest time but I have not and that is probably because they just won't release that movie on any format.

It saw it over a year ago on netflix, but it was removed shortly after...it's a very atmospheric one, I'd love to see it again.

The unbearable lightness of being announced.
[Show spoiler]not really, but it sounded good in my head.

Hopefully Y Tu Mama Tambien, Eraserhead, and Badlands gets announced this wave.

I don't think The Devil's Backbone or Wild Strawberries will be announced until later (March - May).

Also, you forgot The Blob on your list

For the cover fans, it's a film-artistic excuse to say "What if Criterion did one of their fancy-shmancy minimalist covers to (insert fanboy-cult movie here)?" (Yeah, guys, Disney's going to license Wreck-It-Ralph to Criterion, right after Fox licenses Star Wars. )

For the Gee-Criterion-You-Can-Do-Magic fans, it's an excuse to wishfully nag them about whatever Wes Anderson or David Fincher films they haven't released yet. ("Here's my fake Criterion cover to The Game!...Oh, wait.")

For most, it's an excuse to do that EXACT SAME joke Criterion did with their fake Kindergarten Cop cover...And then all the Criterion fans wanted a real one.

Personally, I like the creative movie-arcane ones the site started out with, a bit more:

  • Wild Strawberries upgrade (2011 New Year's hint)
  • Bitter Rice* (2011 New Year's hint/on Hulu Plus -- but some attributed same hint to Amarcord upgrade)
  • On The Waterfront (newsletter hint)
  • Grey Gardens upgrade (newsletter hint)
  • Badlands (newsletter hint)
  • The BRD Trilogy re-release/upgrade* (confirmed by Mulvaney email/on Hulu Plus)
  • Richard III upgrade (Wexner hint)
  • Death of Colonel Blimp upgrade (Wexner hint)
  • Le Samourai (Wexner hint -- maybe not til 2014)
  • Shoah (Wexner hint)
  • The Devil's Backbone (Wexner hint/Del Toro hint)
  • Apu Trilogy or a different Ray film (Wexner hint)
  • Eraserhead* (on Hulu Plus)
  • Wenders' Road Trilogy* (Alice in the Cities on Hulu Plus)

(*Lots of other things on Hulu Plus, but hard to say what will get a Blu-ray release, an Eclipse release, or remain streaming-only.)

And some guesses on unsolved hints/clues:
  • Pierre Etaix film/set (2012 New Year's hint: mime)
  • The Bow (2012 New Year's hint: bow -- but could also refer to Pasolini Trilogy of Life set)
  • 2012 New Year's hint: ocean waves
  • A Brighter Summer Day and other World Cinema Foundation titles (Limite?) (Wexner discussion but not confirmed)
  • Pre-code Warner Bros. title(s) (Wexner hint)
  • Raymond Bernard's Les Miserables (Wexner hint -- possible upgrades of titles in Eclipse sets)
I don't know if this counts but the mention of the film with blu-ray in the same paragraph has me hopeful:

Quote:
The rarest title is Kaneto Shindo’s lyrical The Naked Island, which is a documentary-like 1960 drama about a poor farming family toiling alone on a small island. Shot in southwestern Japan’s Setonaikai archipelago, this is a singular vision of a time and place that makes the viewer feel the family’s struggle and isolation. We haven’t put The Naked Island out on DVD or Blu-ray, but you can stream the whole film below or over at Hulu.

Still to come from the sneak peak Facebook list last year:

Odd Man Out
Autumn Sonata
Spartacus
Life of Oharu
Paris Belongs to Us
Satyricon
Ministry of Fear

This same list had Heaven's Gate, A Night to Remember, Lonesome, Trilogy of Life, Sunday Bloody Sunday, La promesse, The War Room and The Qatsi Trilogy on it so I'm sure the rest will come eventually.

There is also the Blob and Foreign Correspondent. Also since Equinox was on Hulu does that mean an HD release of that title could be forthcoming ?

Nope. There are a lot of titles on Hulu that will likely never get blu releases, for better or for worse.

Is it fair to guess whether the advanced viewing metrics available to Criterion via Hulu have affected any releases that were initially just on Hulu and unlikely for physical release but have since, surprisingly, shown up on DVD/Blu?

The pending announcements are always exciting!

I do expect to see The Life Aquatic sometime in 2013 but February may be a bit early.

PLEASE HELP.

I just bought Traffic Criterion Blu-ray and it will not let me select the DTS-HD 5.1 audio track. It will only let me select 2.0

I am running it through a 5.1 setup.
