I was able to see it when it came out here back in October, which was the perfect time of year for that film. If you're into David Cronenberg's weirder, more "out there" work, I definitely recommend checking it out.
Is that Antiviral?

It looks really interesting. I love Cronenberg's weirder stuff so I very well may import this. Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks for the heads up Joe! I knew nothing about the man. Unfortunately I don't have a NYTimes subscript, but here are a couple of links to help educate those like myself:

I'm very anxious to see it. I'm curious to see how personal of a film it is for Malick. The TM detractors often fail to see what angle he's coming from as a filmmaker. There have been a few tragedies in his life that have affected the way he views life and they've seeped into his works (especially Tree of Life).

I dropped after 37.5 miles after an EMT at the main aid station advised me to stop so that I could keep from injuring the Achilles even worse. I stuck around for the rest of the weekend to help out some friends who were still in the race. I was one of the 35-40% of total runners who ended up dropping out of the race. Nothing particularly devastating, since my training had not quite been ideal going into this, so I'm glad that I saved the legs to recover quickly and run another day.

And this has absolutely jack to do with Criterion movies, except...

I was getting sleeping earlier this morning during the six-hour drive back home, so I reached into the glove compartment to get out the big guns... My old movie soundtrack CD for Repo Man. That music never fails to give me a shot in the arm of adrenaline.

I am really, really, looking forward to seeing what Criterion has done with this movie.
You were having Achilles pain because that's your body telling you to stop being a mental patient
I'll be jogging home from work tonight, which should take about 45-50 minutes. And when I say jog, I mean shuffle
Since all this talk of jogging is off-topic, let's save it by saying that Criterion should restore and release Michael Mann's The Jericho Mile.

I'm sitting here listening to a streaming preview of the new album from Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), and decided to go looking for their 1991 video for "Pandora's Box", a song about Louise Brooks with a music video that includes images from the film, Pandora's Box.

It's a fun video, a good homage, and a great song.

I can't help wondering if Quentin Tarantino had Pandora's Box in mind when he was directing Pulp Fiction, because the character of Fabienne bears an uncanny resemblance in appearance to Louise Brooks. (Come to think of it, Mia Wallace also bears a resemblance to Louise Brooks.)

Since there's been a bit of talk about Harold Lloyd, I thought I'd point everyone to this Tumblr page: F*** Yeah Harold Lloyd!
I'm not sure who runs this Tumblr, but they basically post lots of animated gifs from his films. If you want a primer for his work, this will get you excited about Safety Last!

She really was something else.

I'd love to see this movie on Blu-ray someday, if that's possible.

Tarantino is paying homage to Godard's Vivre Sa Vie which was paying homage to Pandora's Box...

Its early, but any guesses for new announcements for this month? I'm hoping for at least one of the many titles thats been "promised" for some time now ( LORD OF THE FLIES, LE SAMURAI, SCANNERS, THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE, etc.).

Default Recent Films Set In Japan

Howdy all. I was wondering if anyone could steer me towards some recent films (say last 15-20 years) that take place in Japan. I love Japanese films, but a large chunk of the ones i have are older films.

Off the top of my head i can think of Tokyo Sonata, Lost In Translation, Babel, I Wish, and Still Walking as the films in that date age range in my collection that at least partially are set in Japan.

I just went to see Like Someone In Love today, which got me thinking about this.

Anyone have any other recent films to recommend to me that are set in Japan?

I'll go for that! I haven't thought about that film in ages.

I'm not sure if Japanese horror is up your alley, but Pulse (Kairo) is my favorite of that particular lot.

The film is basically about ghosts infiltrating our world through the internet. It's the best cinematic depiction of the ubiquitous theory that the internet leads to isolation under the guise of being connected to everyone. It's an interesting film, to say the least.
