On a related note, I received my copies of Léon Morin, Priest and Army of Shadows from Amazon.com today. They both look like they might be re-shrink-wrapped, which isn't the worst thing, but the cover art for Army of Shadows looks much darker than the photos on Amazon's website. I'm not positive what the correct coloring is supposed to look like, but it sure doesn't look as bright as Amazon.com's picture.

(I don't know how to post pics in here).

EDIT: Another thing ... I ordered these 2 blurays separately, but they were shipped to me in the same box. Maybe that's common. ??

For the record, Almendros was the one that filmed the locust/fire scene, so.. yeah.

It was a 35mm print for Days of Heaven. Gorgeous. That's the only way to describe it. The fire scene in particular, when the adults are silhouetted against the fire, was particularly jaw-dropping. I still greatly prefer his later work, but there's a lot I love here. I did not remember Linda Manz being as fantastic as she was. She really carried the film.

Oh, and when asked what Wexler thought of Malick, his response was: "Terry...he's a weird guy... sort of ecologically spiritual."
Thanks SammyJankis. Days of Heaven has to be one of the best filmed movies. I am glad that Wexler and Almendros are in good terms. I like his comment on Malick "ecologically spiritual." Thanks again.

^ That seems super sketchy to me. Either they repackaged it or somehow there's a bootleg.

I've had amazon do that before as well, so I guess so.

Oh yeah, that looks odd...no way there's a booklet fitting in there. I would definitely try to get it replaced.

Okay, thanks. I'm probably just getting a little paranoid with the other reports and all. (heh)

Just watched Cronos and really enjoyed it. I didn't think the film would take the turn that it did, but it was very nice.

My favorite thing about it was probably the names, especially Jesus. Pretty ironic, if you ask me.

Stop tempting me. Can't spend more money!

By the way, finally finished Fanny and Alexander earlier after spreading it across a few days. I thought it was fantastic, but there were moments where I felt perhaps there was too much exposition and too much of the characters explaining every thought that popped in their head. I would be curious to see the theatrical cut next, but would certainly miss probably all that must be cut out.

What I loved was the way I became so involved in the story, catching my breath at some of the unexpected moments, especially with the Bishop and the ghosts. Not my favorite Bergman but I am amazed at the writing and the complete vision.

I just watched Possession via VHS. Pretty interesting little film. I would definitely consider upgrading to blu if it was released!

Recommended to fans of Polanski, Lynch, Argento, etc!

I picked up the complete Monterey pop festival on blu ray. Do any of you criterion fans think its a solid purchase?

Well, I decided I couldn't resist Amazon's current very reasonable prices on GATE OF HELL, SECRET SUNSHINE, NAKED LUNCH, and RICHARD III, so just put in an order (along with SIDE BY SIDE). More stuff to watch in a couple of weeks! Was tempted to order the Pierre Etaix set, but may wait and add it to a future importCDs order or the half-price summer sale (which as I recall Amazon was matching for many titles last year).

Also used the Foxconnect income tax refund promotion 30% discount that expires today (Friday) to get the two Elia Kazan box sets and HELLO DOLLY. Truly amazing deal there, grand total of $74.17 for 9 classics on Blu-ray with free UPS ground shipping. I'll have plenty to watch this May.

My copy of Leon Priest was re-shrink-wrapped as well (with no blu-ray sticker on the wrapper) so I emailed Amazon and they gave me a 50% refund ($13).

Thanks for the info. My 2 copy of Army of Shadows didn't have the sticker as well. I just sent an email to Amazon asking for a discount.

Thanks! I just sent them an email. I also mentioned the dark Army of Shadows cover. We'll see what happens.

FWIW, I used to work in the art department of a printing company ... both as an artist and also as a QA person, so I'm used to studying/looking closely at printed copy. That being said, the Army of Shadows cover looks like it could be legitimately printed ... looks very good ... but as I said in an earlier post, it just doesn't look as bright as what's shown on Amazon's product description page. ?? (I haven't taken the shrink-wrap off yet to see what the cover stock looks/feels like as far as material or thickness quality ... but it looks okay/clean cut from the outside. This could very well just be me being a little overly cautious.).

My copy of Marienbad from Amazon looks like it was "re-shrink wrapped" as well. It's also missing that long white Criterion sticker. I had bought a copy from Barnes and Noble that had the proper sticker and actually came in pretty good shape. I'm considering a return to Amazon, instead of keeping the extra copy.

I was near a magnolia store hoping they would have more Criterions. Again I could only find Badlands and Rosemarys Baby. I already have Rosemarys Baby. I thought for sure they would have Brazil, Repo Man and On the Waterfront. That's too bad because I have $55 in certificates from the gamers club.
